apropos of that - let’s get a quick anonymous check of what the audience thinks.

do you support drive-thrus in downtown proper?

That was a tough one for me. On the one hand, you all know how much I like driving everywhere. On the other hand, no self respecting Gucci would be eating fast food, much less in his car. So, drive throughs are a no for me.

I totally remember that when it was newly renovated and opened. I think it was like 1985 or something like that.

As do I, especially since this was my ‘hood. That, and the renovation of the old electrical company a few years earlier felt like the strip was modernizing. I think I went once, lol. McD’s put onions all over their burgers, and if you ordered it without, it took way too long.

I worked at McDonald’s (not that one) from 16-20 and those onions were largely dried and rehydrated. Only the 1/4 pounders and McRib used real sliced onions. It might still be the case today.

Edit: I just realized that I should have been more specific. I didn’t work there from 2016-20, rather from age 16-20.

There have been plans for a roundabout at that intersection for a while. Could be related to that.

Drivethrus with mid-block curbcuts make for an awful pedestrian and biking experience. I’ve gotten sideswiped too many times to count by drivers turning into the Zaxby’s on Hillsborough. Not sure how that got permitted but there’s no way a drive-thru should be allowed on such a high-use bike lane and high-pedestrian-volume block. Drivers can and will run you down if you between them and chicken. If there’s a plus side to Raising Cain’s maybe it will it will draw down Zaxby’s customers a little until the novelty wears off.

Zaxby’s is perfectly fine, but Raising Cane’s is another level IMO. Especially since I’ll be walking there from downtown, I highly doubt that I’ll ever pass Cane’s to go Zexby’s ever again.

According to RALtoday, the new Jubala is now open.

I don’t think Zaxbys is any more budget conscious for the average student either.

I have a Raising Cane’s in Miami Beach, and I can eat there for about 12 bucks. I think that I can do a bit better at Zaxby’s, but then again the Raising Cane’s in Raleigh might be a bit cheaper. We will find out.

Trophy on Bickett had their soft opening / neighborhood preview last night. the new space is incredible - and the owners and Trophy team have been incredible. Not sure when it officially opens but I imagine it will be very, very soon.

I’m excited for the neighborhood. Having success here will open minds in other neighborhoods when the embedded retail and hospitality improves their lives and neighborhood.

This is some of the best news I’ve seen recently. Raleigh needs more unique things that give it character and connect it with the past. It can’t all be small, ugly, long abandoned buildings (looking at you Prince Hall Lodge). It should also be interactive things like this, that provide alcohol and delicious food in a nostalgic setting for me.

Portland, OR seems to do this particularly well.

Nice to see, but that’s going to be one tiny market!

Saw K&W Cafeteria permanently closed all their locations today. 8 left in NC (1 in Raleigh) and one in western VA. I’ve never been to one, nor would I ever want to go to one, but I’m sure the nostalgia for many people native to NC is real.
