I kind of understood why that corner space was empty when there was a derelict car repair place across the street, but now there’s a new hotel across the street. Seems like something nice should work there now. Instead we get a smoke shop and two existing businesses leaving.

Has anyone heard anything about what may be moving in to the former Beasley’s space? I was hoping that it would be occupied by now or at the very least a notice on the doors and/or windows about a new tenant coming. Even with the occasional craziness that sometimes occurs in the bus station/Moore Square area, it is still a prime location.
Next meetup location? We can each paint a bear or a scientist…

Hardly seems sustainable. There is ONE entire activity - paint-pouring on a bear figurine - which is A: niche as hell and B: not a very repeatable activity.

I need to tell a story about this place.
For those who might remember, right after Green Monkey closed, it turned into Stonewalls Tavern. Good staff, cheap drinks, I liked it. Then it abruptly closed. I saw someone doing some work on the door and asked him what happened, he said he went in with his buddy, who owns one or two bars already, to buy Stonewalls and that this was his first venture. He was nervous but excited. They intended to open within just a few weeks.
Throughout the next several months, I saw him maybe two more times and inquired as to the status of the new place after his estimated opening date came and went. I think one time he said there was some structural issue with the ceiling and they needed to rip the whole thing apart and redo it. And then there was some issue with permitting. And then something else that I forget… ultimately, I saw people working on it intermittently for maybe a few more months and then it was clear they gave up.
Now, what did this first-time entrepreneur intend to name his new bar? He had told me our very first meeting, before the string of complications that forced them to abandon their venture, that the bar was to be called: The Rabbit Hole.
And thus, it was foretold!

I remember when they had the name painted on the door. Found their Instagram account and it said “coming soon” for the better part of a year (and now appears to be deleted). Hope this new Plain Jane’s spot is successful and can draft off the crowd in that area now with Bend/Wolfe & Porter/Gussie’s.

Hope this is simply the current owner not having the interest or experience to manage it and not a sign that they it’s not doing well enough. They always seem busy enough when I am there

Last I heard from DRA, that Publix is “killing it” and they use it as a case study for downtown retail/grocery. The TBJ article says they did $34 million in sales in 2024, which is a high performing retail grocery store. I don’t know, but I think the fact that they bought it back after selling it is indicative of the fact that it is a good investment , and they wanted it back in the portfolio.

For reference, AI says that a good year for a standard grocer is between 10M and 25M per year. If Publix is blowing past that, then it is indeed killing it! Thanks Jonathan.

Love the convenience of that publix but it is seriously overpriced, if i can muster the extra few minutes to go somewhere else I do. super happy it’s doing well
