The Davie and Amorino and Sir Walter all do fantastic business in that area.
It was mentioned on this forum before that Bulldega would do well in DTR. This is fantastic news. I hoped for a concept just like this on what I consider one of the best blocks downtown in terms of tenant mix and foot traffic.
The issue with DGX was that they had only 2-3 employees at a time and none of them did security. The store will be fine as long as they have a hard and fast line against theft.
DGX had about $150k in merchandise stolen from them over the year.
some important context on how shitty dollar general is.
i am super excited to see an independent grocer move in!
This is amazing news! Having some locally-owned bodega-style options within a short walk has the top thing on our wish list since we moved to the southeast corner of DTR.
Incredible! We just walked into Bulldega two weekends ago when exploring Durham and I can definitely see myself picking stuff up there. ![]()
This was taken 3 weeks ago and it looks about the same now. But does anyone know if something is finally moving into this space?
And this is a corner that deserves a street tree solution, even if they “can’t be planted bc of the parking garage.” Planters with small trees that can be moved would do the trick. Or planters with some other greenery. Anything.
Yeah Bulldega is nice. Kind of upscale I suppose for some people, but way better addition than DGX. I hope they do well.
Wow I watched that entire John Oliver segment (he is a treasure), and now I have a whole newfound hatred of those dollar stores, aside from my general dislike of crappy places.
I don’t think it’s this space, but I remember seeing ads around this area for some chain brewery? Does anyone know if that’s still a thing that’s happening?
Are you thinking of Voodoo Brewing over by Sir Walter on Fayetteville?

Yes, that’s it. I assume they’re still “coming soon,” 69 weeks later? The website for NC locations looks promising:
There’s actively working on spot they’re moving into.
Really? Well that is good then! Someone post a pic so I don’t have to trust you. ![]()
(I do trust you)
Think this makes a lot of sense. The main seating area in the OG State of Beer on Hillsborough always felt a bit underutilized. And having to explain which State of Beer you were going to now when there were two locations very close to one another was a bit confusing (same deal if you were at Bend Bar and didn’t know if your tab could transfer between Bend and the new State of Beer).
Love Gussies/Hippo and really like that they’re keeping the name.
The newest retail spot to open in a previously never occupied space in the L building:
I could be wrong, but it seems that the art gallery a few doors down is currently empty, and the hair salon also looked desolate.
Yeah, I can confirm that the art gallery moved to a bigger location somewhere else in Raleigh.
The L building has always struggled with bottom floor retail, which is either a blessing or a curse if you live there.
It confounded me back when I lived there several years ago. That corner unit at McDowell begs for something cool.
Oh thank god!!! I was getting worried, we hadn’t had a new TOBACCO SMOKE SHOP with the largest and brightest LED signs on planet earth open up in a while. Nature is healing ![]()
