General Retail/Restaurant News

I was going to use the word “weird” as well, but I refrained. That said, it is a weird location.

I’d assume the Durham location is definitely staying open. Not sure about the taproom behind Wegmans, I had forgot about that location honestly.

I always found it kind of odd that Natty Greene’s didn’t work out here. I’m honestly starting to think that this just isn’t the right spot for a brewery, mainly due to the crowd that frequents Glenwood South nowadays. I think any of these breweries would kill it in the warehouse district, for example.

Clouds has a taproom location in Chapel Hill (Franklin St) and one in Durham (Brightleaf Square). Their Raleigh brewery is still open behind the Wegmans, but I believe there are plans for that area. When they closed their previous downtown location, they announced they were actively looking for a space near DT to re-open.

I love the former Natty Greenes/Tobacco Road space - and the bar food - but the Tobacco Road brewed beer was atrocious. Clouds will definitely improve things on that front.

It’s totally a great space for a successful business. It just needs the right one.

Replacing a brewery with awful beer with a brewery with bad beer.

Always thought this is just a little overpriced for being a sports bar. Never felt like it was a better option than My Way or Woodys.

Also went one time for college football and instead of any of the local teams they had Iowa plastered everywhere for their fan club of 10 people. But maybe that’s too anecdotal to be a reason they closed

Tuscan Blu in the Depot closed as of last weekend. Now the only businesses left there that are open more then one day a week are Tasty and Videri.

Any idea if they are closing due to lack of business or lease expiring ahead of proposed development?

I regularly go to Tasty Bev for beer pick up and Videri for coffee when I’m down in that area. Tuscan Blu was always confusing to me. Rarely saw any advertising/events/people going in or out. Always felt very hidden over there.

The food was very good though, as was the service. Definitely had the feel of a family-run gem. The problem is—like far too many downtown restaurants—expecting that Word-of-Mouth is all you need to keep business coming in, when it’s not.

I have no idea. It was always an enigma, really. Most of the time I went by there, it was pretty empty. Other times it would be very busy. I live nearby and would sometimes forget that it was there. I never saw them advertise.

I think the owner had been in the restaurant business for a long time, so maybe he was just ready to retire.

Mordecai Beverage Co. shut it’s doors yesterday. Unsurprisingly, there were lots of people gathered for a proper send off. Anyone know why they closed so suddenly?

They were a victim of the shopping center’s success. Landlord raised the rent on them, gave them something like two weeks to adjust. They couldn’t afford it, so they closed. It’s a shame, especially considering they were an early anchor tenant there.

Source: Know the owner.

That’s a shame. I’ve been going to that CC since Mordecai opened. They should be given special dispensation since they are part of why the CC is succesful in the first place! I know that’s not the real world though.

That’s so messed up. I hate that this happens.

A new grocery, Wolfside Urban Market, will open where DGX was in the Edison. Same guy that opened Bulldega in downtown Durham. Will be a more upscale grocer with grab and go sandwiches, specialty products, beer and wine.

Seems like a great add. Hope they can weather the issues that other businesses in that area have struggled with.

By “other issues” you mean Moore Square/bus station…

They much have ChatGPT that’s name lol. “That’s a great idea! I see that Raleigh is home of the Wolfpack…” I hope they have some affordable groceries because bullcity subreddit always complains about prices at Bulldega. But hey, I more than welcome them to replace an empty retail spot and a much needed grocery void filled.
