General Retail/Restaurant News

I’ve been thinking of sarcastically applying this really large, “Warning: Incoming Opinion” type image that I will add to those who continue to use their opinions to keep a thread off topic after light encouragement beforehand to bring it back.

Opinions are bait for more off topic posts. Let’s please steer this back on topic.

Damn, some really good retail/restaurant news in here today

“We can’t afford to be shut down”

Jerome Powell, would say otherwise

Some people have touched on it, but I think most people have absolutely no idea “who” is dying from Covid-19. If you are under the age of 60 and do not have an existing serious underlying medical condition, you have an infinitesimal chance of dying from the virus.

I’ll be going to restaurants, even inside. I’ll still social distance and wear a mask when necessary.

I believe its a well defined line that already exists as a percentage of sales. I think that changed a few years ago to be more generous about letting the food sales be less but I haven’t worked in the industry in 20 years so don’t know.

Poole’s is reopening for pickup tomorrow, and 42nd street is opening up for dine in on Monday.

Went to El Rodeo tonight with the hub. Only place open for table seating at 2130. Everything else was buttoned up pretty tight. It’s gonna be a slow climb out of the lockdown.

I appreciate your feedback. I’m not trying to belittle the situation that’s going on out there but moderating is tough and I choose to let people speak their minds a bit. (just a bit) I’ve moderated plenty of COVID “opinions” so far I feel so (for all) keep the feedback coming.

I realize that we all start anonymous here but I choose to let people’s words represent themselves. If they say something stupid well…:man_shrugging:

I do direct message people in the background, which you can’t see, hoping to encourage smarter conversation. Some seem to get the message while others don’t.

There are a lot of intelligent people on this board that are contributing some good stuff that has, in my opinion, continued to educate those that just aren’t caught up yet. I’m talking about the main things that I’ve been talking about for years; development, transit, planning in DTR.

We had a COVID thread which didn’t work. I encourage everyone to share your thoughts on the pandemic in a respectful way and know that this is not a forum to try and change others minds.

Just saw on WRAL that breweries, distilleries, and cideries are considered production facilities primarily, so they can open their taprooms (with restrictions) as of yesterday as well. This makes sense if restaurants are able to open.

I don’t think anyone is questioning the fact that there was/still is a shortage of PPE.

Many people are being forced into a position where their options are to work without PPE or get fired… your comments here are, without a doubt, disturbing and you should read them back to yourself and consider how these comments will be read by people in vulnerable populations. All of us want to reopen the state… but we shouldn’t sacrifice people and life’s because it doesn’t make economic sense. We can and will get through this and we should support each other rather than pretend this is a non-issue.

My sisters hospital was 1 ventilator shy of being out at the heigh of the pandemic In Maryland, I would much rather have an over supply then be put into that position. We should be super thankful it hasn’t gotten worse here rather than chewing people out saying “it’s absurd”.

You didn’t quote @Phil correctly. He said it’s getting absurd. I’m sorry that your sister has been put into the position that she has. I truly am. But shaming people and telling @dtraleigh that he’s not moderating good enough is a bit out of bounds, IMO, in a forum about restaurants in downtown Raleigh.

All I’ll say is I’ve been getting a lot of take out the last two weeks and its effing good. Trying to have two adults work full time from home with no childcare is not easy at all (though we are thankful we have paying jobs) so we pump that money back in by relaxing with some really well done takeout. Probably up to a dozen different places anyway. Jose and Sons is tied with Stanbury for best so far but Gringo and Times always had a takeout standard and continue to provide good food. I know we’re all ready for normal, but in a weird sort of way I’ll miss the various silver linings (again, in no way overlooking the very real seriousness…I know three people who had relatives or close friends die from it) and the weekly hunt for new places to walk to (sanity walk) get food and walk home is certainly one for us folks lucky enough to live walking distance from so many good eats.

DTR @ 2200 tonight was a ghost town, again. Guess everybody went to the beach. CharGrill it was, and over 75% were masked tonight. (No judgements. Just an observation, with a really poor sampling bias.)

It’s going to be this way for the first few weeks. I was in Chapel Hill yesterday and the restaurants whose outdoor seating was open had a few tables occupied but the diners imo looked ridiculous while they were being served by waitresses wearing masks, etc. Its going to take some getting used to for people. Not to mention, the vast majority of restaurants did not reopen right when Phase 2 started (and I don’t blame them).

So, anyways… Restaurants?

I am for restaurants. With the heat starting to set in, I am about over cooking.
I thought the review of AC’s “ClubHouse” in the N&O was very good. This is an idea I’d actually thought about for awhile - set menu, order on-line, set pick-up time - but I was thinking about working parents. The Clampdown clearly spurred her to this, and many others I dare say. We are going to coast in a couple weeks, and I am going to encourage my folks to bring down the dessert package she is offering!!

For those of you who don’t look often, the N&O is on sale this weekend.

Went to check in on the Outer Banks place for the first time in a few months, lots of odds and ends to catch up on. Decided to give this dine-in eating thing a try with a restaurant that opened at 11:30. We were one of three tables until around 12:00, then the floodgates opened and the place filled up. Despite the website saying diners would be asked to wear masks, no one else did besides us and the waitstaff. People seemed back to normal in a jiff. Though I guess it’s easier to do on a vacation. The traffic is also up today after seeming a tad subdued yesterday.

Hey all. The community is clearly trying to get this thread back on topic. (lots of activity behind the scenes) Let’s please do just that.
