Yep. The Compare in Apex has a lot of Brazilian stuff. The owner/manager makes runs up to Jersey to buy.

Yup correct, from Orlando! They expanded in Tampa when I was living there (around 2016). Built one up on North Dabry in N Tampa. But then followed with an amazing location (you have to ck it out) right before you head into South Tampa area…It is such a nice looking spot and it literally transformed the area there. This is, btw, exactly what I was referring when I was saying that this BBQ, in that location where it is going, could do. It has a similar feel.

Not only is their food so amazing (including amazing deserts!), but the guy who runs it is truly an amazing example (just from reading). He gave up a career in a Big 6 firm to do this, and does it because he loves serving people. And it truly shows. Btw they also built a spot in Atlanta a bit after I moved (took a little longer to finish it, it seems)

I fully agree with Raleigh! It would explode here, that is the type of town it is made for! We should let them know haha…

just correction about Lawrence, they are not at Killjoy anymore, as far as I know. They have transferred up to the new spot. It’s been few months. I did try them once, he stayed extremely busy. Wish he was opening up in DT!!

Somehow I missed the spot by Fairweather. That is going to be amazing there, great spot for it for sure!

Lawrence was there popped up in front of Killjoy last week, I think.
They’re off this week and been doing the on / off thing over the summer…but, maybe things go strong when they get open in RTP and they keep a Raleigh pick up or pop-up thing happening with some frequency…Things these days seem fluid, so we shall see what shakes out.

wow sure enough! I haven’t seen his truck though, so it seems odd (you couldn’t miss it before)-plus that’s what he told me. But that’s good, hope he would stay in that spot, he would do so well

This is a downtown Raleigh forum but for those of you living in Raleigh whose offices are in RTP, I found out today that Cheerz Deli in RTP is closing. Big bummer to me as their pressed sandwiches were the best in the triangle, imo.

Aw man, I haven’t been there in forever, but it’s one of the first places they took me when I started at my first (and current) RTP job!

I would have gotten take out from there for dinner if they had modified their hours away from just breakfast/lunch, but alas. Was always going to be a tough spot for them given how dependent they were on RTP office workers, not unlike how downtown Raleigh restaurants are struggling because they rely on downtown office workers for lunchtime business.

I went for an early evening walk last night to actually get to use my legs, and there were a lot of people for a Tuesday eating at the restaurants that I passed.

So many taco/Mexican food fans among the chefs. When I moved here from CA in 2005, I could not find a place that even offered corn tortillas for their tacos. I suppose they existed but, not that I could find easily. Glad to see the whole taco scene here has upped it’s game. I was really missing a good, simple street taco. Same for the entire Raleigh food scene, thankfully. It was pretty slim pickings when I first got here.

I’m hopeful that the Phase 2.5 reopening, combined with less oppressive September weather, will allow more restaurants to open for dine-in and ride this out. Also seems like the protests have stayed non-destructive.

Not until plywood comes down will there be any life downtown.

I think there’s a need, in general, for simple food done well. You just can’t beat consistent, cheap eats from time to time. I was glad to see Taqueria El Toro get a nod on this list as it’s one of the first places that comes to mind for me that fits this bill.

I felt like that list highlighted some of our best ‘just outside the core’ spots - which if you consider, goes a long way towards achieving what you mention. DTR still has not transcended to the point that the rents are not discouraging for most of these sorts of consistent value models which really only succeed based on volume in combination with approachable business cost. It’s certainly interesting to think about in a living with Covid world, when ‘dependable patterns’ have become less so due to multifactor ripples in the fabric of society.

The plywood is just one factor of the lack of normalcy affecting DTR. I get that it’s one of the most annoying to many but an instant rebound doesn’t just occur if the paneling comes down.
It’s simply going to take time and all of the ‘shakes fist at sky’ stuff isn’t going to change that…

It’s really too bad that some of the town’s vibrancy boom in September will be lost with the festival cancellations but maybe there’s a ‘bounce’ as folks simply revert from summertime coastal adventuring and fall back into more of their spring / fall city outings. Fingers crossed for all businesses to find their way to the other side of this thing…
