It will be nice to have a revamped space there. Hopefully they can differentiate the menu enough from SmokeStacks just up the street
Wow, that’s a new one. However, regardless, I think it’s a different angle that needs to be revamped. Plus I think it has the ability to connect the Oakwood/Transfer and also the Morgan area all by reviving it there. One thing I feel is that there still needs to be a way to connect a lot of disparate sections around the area. I feel this can be a key.
It was open before and during Covid but got seriously damaged during the rioting and had been closed ever since then.
David’s dumping closed for good
I was responding to your Modern Market post…
Not sure if you’re referring to something else?
I saw them post about Covid ‘complications with staff’ this week causing temporary closing for health and cleaning. With the ‘State of things’ over there, it’s understandable…
Did you hear something permanent ?
Yea it was. Sorry I didn’t respond there. We were talking about the new bbq place taking over the Oakwood (?) spot, the Argentinian place
You do need a modern take on that place, which the bbq joint will bring
So @NoRaAintAllBad, that’s kinda related I guess. Local is all good, but you need to come to the times too imo, and those places from 20 or so years ago represent an older Raleigh, things look different now. Just my thoughts from living in many different places.
A combination is good, not advocating to remove them, but simply replace the old with the new in some capacity…
Hmmm. The David’s website indicates a temporary change. But, that could be out of date.

Lol…right. That’s why those 20 year old places (like Oakwood…) are all shutting down-here and elsewhere. I mean they were so tasty…many of them. But all (many) shutting down
I’m not against local places btw, let’s not be mistaken. I am for moving with the times. We don’t want to stay in the 80’s or 90’s. This is 20’s now. There is innovation that happens. There is also something called disruption. Many businesses innovate as new entrants come in the market and many fall out of the way. But to assume that every restaurant or biz that’s been there since 1990’s is so yummy and should be the way forever and ever, is so naive honestly. They have to compete every single day-bc the competition and innovation will continue to come always. And Raleigh has also changed a lot, so you can only expect lots of changes on the way. When did Raleigh have 2 (3 coming) grocery stores? When did Raleigh have 2 (3 coming) boutique hotels where you can do staycation and go and spend a night of fun. I’m sorry was that at the Days inn before? Btw these things have come only in the last year…since I’ve lived in the city!!! There are tons of new projects, including the one by weworks, Smoky Hollow and the Pendo building-these will turn retail upside down on its head. Not to mention Warehouse and the NEW Dillon, which literally didn’t exist a few years ago (and which brought us Weaver market btw). Also what about the coffee shop that shut down in the Chocolate factory (don’t now remember her name) but a new more cutting edge and innovative biz started in Wakeforest…by competing…and bringing us the BEST coffee, and it’s called Black and White and it’s now open and it’s wonderful (and btw they have transformed their patio in a wonderful way too).
Ok? I have lived in many cities, I am happy to take all of you on on this and many other topics…I have much more I can add so please just ask. Be well friends, enjoy our city…
I’m sad about Oakwood Cafe. We used to go a lot ever since we moved here, and was one of a very few places that we kept going back to.
Finally made it out to Longleaf’s lounge. Super cute digs. Hope more are able to support. Must be extra tough being a hotel these days
I mean it served its time…you know? It was tasty (kinda ok actually, trust me, I’ve had better)
Btw try out Publix Cuban subs if you like cuban. And before you get too excited, they are based in Lakeland FL, outside Tampa. THEY KNOW THEIR CUBAN there!!! Yes I lived in Tampa and yes I’ve tried the best cuban places there!!! There are some mighty good ones (many people don’t realize Tampa is Mecca of Cuban places, vs Miami but it actually has a lot!). For reference, try out ‘La Terrasita’ when you’re down there. My fav sandwich place was the Floridian, yummy…
And regardless what brand it is, others will come in its place and make it better. We still do need a good MODERN bbq joint, so this is a plus! There is one in Knightdale that opened (really good but a bit pricey imo…). What happened to all those bbq places they were gonna open? Glad they are doing it now.
Ck this out, you tell me now you miss Oakwood…
speaking of Tampa and FL, one of my favs bbq spots is 4 rivers. Mmm amazing place and amazing customer service, they care
it’s the read deal trust me friends. https://4rsmokehouse.com
I’ve been living between Miami and Raleigh for almost 20 years now, and never did get the hype of Oakwood Cafe as a go-to Cuban food destination. Then again, maybe that’s because in Miami I can just jump in my car and head over to Calle Ocho in Little Havana, or to some place in Hialeah. I know that this isn’t about DT Raleigh, but have you tried Casa Cubana, way, way up in far North Raleigh? I can’t decide if it’s worth the long drive to try it.
It was the best you could get around here and it was good enough that you got a little taste of Cuban. Plus, they even had a choripan sandwich which follows the same logic.
I believe 4Rivers is from the Orlando area? Regardless, it is fantastic BBQ! And they’ve done a great job expanding.
EDIT: It’s coming back to me now.
Established in an old transmission shop on Fairbanks Avenue in Winter Park, FL. In 2009, the original 4 Rivers Smokehouse attracted herds of barbecue connoisseurs, who flocked to the neon “Hot Brisket Now” sign and seductive smell of slow smoked meats.
I remember now hearing about this BBQ place off Fairbanks that would have a line around the block at lunch and once they ran out, you’re out of luck! They pretty quickly opened another location, then another and began finally meeting the demand of the locals. Bringing this back to Raleigh, I’d love to have this addition to our BBQ scene but they are family-owned and have no intentions of franchising so even if you wanted to, you’d have to convince Mr. 4Rivers Raleigh is the right place to be.
The BBQ wave is definitely still rising.
PrimeBBQ in Knightdale is really good. Not inexpensive but man, you can tell the quality of the meat and process is top notch. It’s so simple (the rub) but that’s the key - it let’s the protein shine. It’s worth the trip.
Lawrence is still doing their pop-up thing at Killjoy until their container is ready in RTP, so check them out.
I like the ‘cheffy’ twists to the side game, sandwiches are legit and the proteins offered are solidly executed. Great crew of folks.
Longleaf will hopefully do well in that spot vacated by Oakwood. A cuban nod to the prior life of that space would be a great touch.
Don’t forget that Wyatt’s BBQ is coming to Gateway Plaza ( that’s a Picnic partner) so there’s an established level of quality and process in that business.
And last but certainly not least, you’ve got Sam Jones’ space coming along on West by the Fairweather.
There’s tradition and modernity to be celebrated across all of those spots.
Should be quite the times ahead to enjoy the 'cue in Raleighwood…
we never ordered the Cuban Food there. We’d go because of the simple Argentinian dishes. As soon as we moved here, a few Brazilian friends recommended the place, which killed a little bit of homesickness for the wife, seeing as though the triangle doesn’t have any true Brazilian restaurants.
