that’s so great, never been there though is it good? I am looking forward to the new place in the south section

Apparently it is good, but I’ve also never been, despite being here over 11 years and wanting to. They keep unhelpful hours and were (maybe are) cash only. Someday…

Some random weirdo I follow on social media posted this of Five Star. Too good not to share! I absolutely love it!

(credit to @dtraleigh , and hope I didn’t steal your thunder. I waited at least 30 minutes to see if you were sharing on here.)

Edit: I just noticed that the chopsticks extend onto the original brick. Pretty cool! (Was this a subtle reference to VP Pence’s fly encounter at the debate?)

Hey thanks! I do really like that mural, one of my favorites and raises the bar. Let’s see if other spots can try and top that.

It is not. Dry, grocery store quality BBQ on dry, grocery store quality buns.

I used to go to Clyde Coopers in college when it was in its old building. Run by an old southern family it felt like. But I thought the BBQ and hush puppies where pretty good. Not great. Sort of like Smithfields IMO (but maybe not as tasty).

I’ve never disliked Clyde Cooper’s, but I’ve never felt like it differentiated itself much either. I’m just as happy eating Q & hushpuppies on a “tray” from Cook Out for $5.99.

The barbecue boom continues—North Hills will be getting a BBQ Lab restaurant, owned by the same folks who operate the popular Redneck BBQ Lab near Benson. They say it’s only the first of several new restaurants for them. Projected to open in spring 2021.

Would be nice if we’re the “Gateway to Eastern 'Que.” VisitRaleigh take notes.

I’ve yet to try Redneck BBQ Lab, but my friend hypes it up as the best BBQ in NC. He drives from Chapel Hill to Benson fairly often just to get this BBQ. Excited to have them join Raleigh.

I know this may be heresy to some of y’all, but any recommendations in Raleigh for non-eastern NC style BBQ?

My personal favorite is dry rub ribs, Memphis style. I also like KC style with a tomato based sauce. Eastern NC style is fine but it seems like that is practically all the quality bbq you can get here. Suggestions for quality variety would be appreciated.

@Street_Grid, think you have to pretty much move to get THAT lol

Cooper’s is now open but still boarded up

Don’t even bother if they are going to keep plywood up

They do a good job…glad to see them pivot after pulling out of the Selma / 95 food hall.

You should give PrimeBBQ in Knightdale a try - seems more Texas inspired.
High quality proteins, minimal rub, solid technique, wood flavors - rotating daily ‘special protein’ Tues-Sat. Think it’s the best dry rib in town and the brisket is choice daily.
Don’t sleep on the Tuesday pastrami…

Thanks for the recommendation! That is a long way for me, but I’ll give it a try?

Anyone have any thoughts for somewhere closer to west Raleigh?

Dickey’s BBQ Pit is a chain so take if for what it’s worth. They have a couple of locations around and have more variety that you are looking for. Brisket, Ribs, pulled port, chicken, sausage, etc.

I’ve been once and it was good, but not enough to get me to go there over a typical, local, mom and pop type BBQ place.
