General Retail/Restaurant News

Coglin’s closed according to WRAL…personally don’t consider this a big loss aside from people losing their jobs which is terrible and just ranks as yet another of the many casualties of COVID.

As for the bar itself I thought it was awful; cheesy on so many levels. Felt like it should have been on Glenwood (which would have only added to the cheesiness of that strip).

Hopefully the building owners can get something a bit more grown-up that helps Downtown’s core

That’s sad I’m sure for the employees (if they were even still working there…they don’t really do outside seating, do they?), but there’s basically nothing on Fayetteville St at this point that I even care about. Once this pandemic is over, there needs to be a serious conversation about the status of this street. It was new and revitalized right as I moved down here, but it’s been slowly dying for at least the last 5 years.

I have an idea, why not make it a pedestrian mall?

Man, this has always been my problem with this street. Everything lively is happening inside, which doesn’t do a great job of creating a lively street scene and doesn’t help at drawing in customers. And that’s before we start talking about outdoor service bc of a pandemic.

This is what needs to be happening up and down the street…

outdoor-seating

Get rid of all the planters and concrete and benches all along Fayetteville St. I know people will ague that those are pretty and it makes for a place to rest and relax, but it eats up a ton of sidewalk space that could be used for pedestrian traffic once seating areas are installed in front of restaurants/bars/cafes.

Did they close because of COVID or the imaginary executive order?
What would Coglin’s status be if they were located 3 hours south in SC or FL?

I know you’re kidding, but honestly I think this would be great. The issue before was that no one wanted to be downtown. That’s no longer true, it’s just that they don’t want to be on Fayetteville St apparently.

Get rid of parking spaces and expand the area for these sidewalk experiences. If there’s too much resistance to that idea, get rid of just some of them to create opportunities for more sidewalk engagement.
I joked in my earlier post about the pedestrian mall, but I was firmly in the camp that wanted it kept and revised, not eliminated. It could have been designed to accommodate a parade and still have a visual corridor from end to end, and it didn’t need to be reincarnated as a just a pretty double dead-end street with parallel parking. The pedestrian mall failed because it was built when people didn’t want to be downtown, not because there wasn’t a place to drive. So, we kept the pedestrian mall for all those years when it wasn’t wanted, and just as we saw folks want to return to the city center, we tore it down. We claimed that returning the street was a success because of the investment that followed, but was it just dumb-luck timing? When the street opened to great fanfare, boosters predicted that it would create a shift in energy to Raleigh’s central core, and away from places like Glenwood South. How did that work out?

I LOVED the Fayetteville Street Mall, and thought it was very cool (I had never seen anything like it before moving to Raleigh). Then I visited Denver and saw the 16th Street Mall, and LOVED that too. I was not happy with the decision to return it to a “regular” street again.

As for the restaurants on FS, IMO you have high end (places I have no desire to visit) or fast food (Subway and the former Chick-Fil-A). All the “missing middle” establishments are around Moore Square, Warehouse District, or GS. Those high end places don’t strike me as the type of establishments where those who can afford them would want to eat outside on the sidewalk (especially with our lovely high humidity and summer heat). The alfresco diners appear to frequent the more moderately priced places, IE not on FS.

Fayetteville Street Mall was creepy back in the 80’s. Not completely against the concept as Charlottesville and Burlington Vt have nice ones. Raleigh never set it up to be a fun destination, for whatever reason.

@Francisco What is a trompo and what are Tijuana style red tacos?

Trompo is the rotisserie dealio - like gyros…think Al Pastor. Chido near Mamis had one, I think…
Typically those red tacos are from birría…yum.

Rainbow Luncheonette on West St is supposedly opening in the next few months. Walked by today and it looks nice. Definitely would do well in a non-social distancing world.

The more tacos in DTR the better! Plus I’ll focus on different food items so the overlap will be different.

Funny enough the owner of this restaurant grew up within a mile of my hometown in Los Angeles and probably visited the same King Taco that’s on the corner of my city block. lol

Maybe the taco competition will force Armadillo Grill to up their game, or be replaced with a new concept? One can hope.

Former LA resident here, King Taco had probably the best house-made hot sauce of any Mexican place I went to. So good it was painful! If this place is anything like King Taco it’ll make a killing.

If they don’t serve organ meat (i.e. tongue, tripe, cheek/jowl, buche, etc) then count me out. :grumpy_cat:
