From the back side.
Or, given the context, look up Neal Stephenson’s first novel (might be out of print), The U, for an idea of a university environment dominated by a single ginormous building.
Any updates on this?
It’s a little taller now.
I really do hope that a lot more dorms AND apartments (for students & non students) get built in this area. This area has the potential to become a bigger and southern version of Boston University’s campus (go Terriers!) but directly adjacent to two popular parks (Pullen & Dix).
Weird how it seems to be topped out on the left side. Not how I remember the rendering.
I visited BU recently and was really impressed with their pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. It left me wishing for something similar on Hillsborough Street.
That is a massive building.
Looks like a mini city. How many units is this building supposed to be?
667 units, 2193 bedrooms. It is going to be over a million square feet.
It is extremely impressive and I love the density. I do wonder about the wisdom of cramming this many students into a single building. I mean, have lived in both Bragaw and Sullivan, with something like a thousand students apiece, in double occupancy rooms. But this is more than twice as many students, and for as crazy as the dorms could get, off campus housing always had the reputation for being even crazier, at least back then.
Anyway I do understand the demand, I believe NCSU is going to tear down all of the west campus dorms fairly soon, and I doubt they will rebuild with double occupancy. I think kids these days are fine with sharing an apartment with others, but mostly don’t want to share a room.
Somewhat related, but in my experience the 17-22 year old population right now is much more tame and mature than previous cohorts. Probably a product of growing up with smart phones (cameras everywhere) and exposure to different cultures at a much younger age
But they have terrible style
She’s a girthy one, isn’t she?
I know taking down Lee/Sullivan has been part of the master plan for a long time, but the University needed more living space in areas like Centennial to offset the dorm loss. Would hope that this amount of private living space for students factors into that plan. I also hope that this amount of student apartments would drive some kind of additional retail on Hillsborough in between PR and the W Morgan strip that now has Wolfe & Porter/Gussie’s/etc.
With how long the Doak Field baseball renovations are taking, Lee/Sullivan replacements may be up before they do anything else at Doak.
NCSU is gonna HAVE to run a new Wolfline route near there when it opens.
Wolfline would be best as it’s free and familiar/comfortable for students – but at the very least, GoRaleigh did just start their #9 route going up and down Hillsborough St., every 15 mins all day! (students can also get a free bus pass)
