Holiday Inn is still taking reservations through May 2025; had been set to close at the end of Feb.
One elevator was still out of service as of new year’s.
Is the bar at the top still closed?
Yeah, no sign that it’s reopening. IIRC, the elevator button for it had been taped over but that has since fallen off.
Based on this article, it sounds like the hotel is staying:

I am really conflicted on this, but it is a damn sight better than a gravel lot waiting for a building to start.
What about the gravel lot between the hotel building and Dawson street?? This is just over block from the state capital
Yup, put some lipstick (although converting to an Indigo is an upgrade) on the hair curler and develop the freaking parking lot…!
Seems most of what they do (outside NYC) is apartment and / or hotel so maybe they’ll drop something apartment related on the gravel lot. Why not a pseudo-copy of this Savannah property…?
I love this plan to convert to Hotel Indigo which is a funkier brand from IHG comparable to a Moxy by Marriott. Plus I am glad they are saving this historical building from 1969 as there only a handful of these round Holiday Inns left (one being in Charleston SC)
No mention of the lot next door but as it is owned by Tidal the devloper I would sell it or develop it separately.
and you were right a funkier brand was found LOL
Renovating the hotel is a much better alternative for the City than sitting on your hands because you can’t get financing for a full demolition/ground up development. More than fine with the existing building remaining there, but this does call into question what happens with the surface lot next door (as others have mentioned). I was more enthusiastic about the previous plans because they would’ve taken care of that entire block.
I wish them well. CIrcular buildings are a PITN.
The parking lot, of course, is a former Gulf gas station. Holiday and Gulf had a cozy relationship in the 1960s. Many Gulf stations were built adjacent to Holidays, Holiday accepted the Gulf credit card, etc.
It would be nice if they built the Kimpton (maybe less rooms) and Residences on the surface lot with limited parking space. There is still a high demand for additional housing downtown and another more exclusive hotel may be warranted.
I’m going to hold off judgement until I see some renderings on the new plan. I had already kind of given up on the Kimpton so my grieving has moved into the acceptance stage. I don’t have a lot of confidence that a building with this many issues is going to be great after a refurbishment, but it depends how much work they do. Gutting it to its frame could yield something pretty cool, albeit with low ceilings by today’s standards, especially if they put a top notch restaurant upstairs and have new elevators. Repainting it and doing a cheap redo of the lobby and guest rooms is going to be pretty disappointing. Trying to be optimistic until I hear otherwise.
I like optimistic pigs. They spread joy to others. I too will hold off any negative comments. I am in favor of reuse when practical. My fear has always been that this building had outlived its useful life. But maybe not. I would hope that no one is going to plop down good money on renovations if the building isn’t sound and the expected occupancy isn’t there. Just goes to show…don’t count the old lady out until the wrecking ball shows up.
At least ours isn’t THIS butt-ugly
You do have a point….
I like the brick a lot better actually. I hope the Indigo does something about the white stucco exterior
It’s 100’ wide, which is plenty wide enough for a standalone development. Even better if the existing HI garage ramps could be used.
