I haven’t thought about that place in years! Thanks for jogging the old memory!
Hoping its a Kimpton. Random note about Kimptons…
The Kimpton Cottonwood in Omaha was one of the most surprising hotels I’ve stayed at in the US. Stunning property that was part new building and part old building restoration, had several incredible restaurants and a swanky pool with a resort style bar that locals could buy club memberships to use.
Felt so random to have such a nice place in Omaha. I’ve dreamed of Raleigh getting some sort of option like that where downtowners could become members at the pool club.
Raleigh anti growth history is like those tabs that keep popping up on the computer screen. I feel like we’re cursed with those people of all places why choose Raleigh of all cities to prevent from growing, not Durham, not Roanoke why us?
While I think a good antivirus program could help you with your illicit popups, I agree with your feeling that Raleigh could be bigger and has so much unfulfilled potential. I would like to see much more development downtown. I definitely feel like we miss out on some opportunities that are presenting themselves right to our face.
I’m talking about all the NIMBYs who live here in Raleigh or want to move here. It’s like plants vs zombies no matter what you do the zombie gets inside the house.
Nimbyism is the typical xenophobia our country is suffering from now. Raleigh is the largest city in the country right now, with the least amount of amenities. Think about that. Sad times.
I guess the Inidigo hotel could be pushed to Phase 2 and the newer hotel (probably a Kimpton) could be built for Phase 1?
It doesn’t seem like that much work has been done with the Holiday Inn building.
Tons of work has been done on the Holiday Inn.
Right we just wouldn’t know it because the outside still looks like … that
You’re being incoherent. There are larger cities with no rail or BRT. Larger cities with less impressive downtowns–actually quite a few. Larger cities with no pro sports… idk man the troll is getting stale.
Inclusion on the NRHP affords only modest protection against tear-down.
Agree that both the local and national historic destinations do not prevent demolition or unapproved alterations of the exterior.
Loss of the local designation has only the consequence of the last three years of deferred taxes (50%) being now due.
For those interested in a deep dive on the history of Raleigh’s Holiday Inn their local historic landmark property application can be viewed here:
What larger city has no team. Just about every major metro has at least one team. What do you mean by trolling it kinda is true.
I think there are a few larger metros w/o major sports teams, but not many: Austin has no big four sports team, though they do have MLS. Virginia Beach has no major teams, nor does Providence.
That being said, while I don’t quite agree that Raleigh is the largest city w/ the least amount of amenities, I don’t think it is unreasonable or trolling to say that. I am pro-Raleigh, but I think amenities here are a bit light. There are obviously lots of pros like a great economy, relatively low crime rate, reasonable cost of living, several nice museums, some cool parks, and a solid food scene, but you can also reasonably point out that Raleigh has an underdeveloped downtown, no major body of water or mountains, only one major sports teams, little mass transit, low walkability, no major amusement park, and no real icons or things that are well-known outside the area.
Raleigh has the honor of getting larger, later. Give the city some time!
Just a few decades ago, Raleigh was in a completely different class of cities. The dam will break. It will.
You added an extra letter there lol
This city is has been larger for 20 years now… How about our leaders step up their game and ignore the xenophobia. Raleigh and Charlotte are literally pier areas population wise. However, Charlotte leaders take their city so much more seriously. Nimbyism is xenophobia and my beautiful city has too much potential for this nonsense.
We’ve degraded to saving an ugly run down hotel. I believe this city can do much better than this with the right leadership. Let’s do this Raleigh.
They should go all the way and push for a UNESCO World Heritage designation.
…It’s a nice hotel proposal project! Glad to see that little plot utilized…to get this back on subject lol
