I wonder what kind of liability insurance you need to operate a mobile axe-throwing concession (far left). You can’t tell from the photo but only three sides are caged, the back end of the truck is completely open. Doesn’t seem like a great idea. I wouldn’t trust some of my friends with an axe at a street fair while sober, let alone a bunch of randos on their 5th beer.
Motorized vehicles are back for parades, with more safety measures. Personally, I think this is the right move.
All they had to do was inspect/require actual vehicle inspections and the last tragedy could have been avoided. I expect way more time and money was spent on this than really necessary, but after the fact, I suppose you have to show that you’re properly reacting.
It’s probably the right move, but I really liked the last couple parades without vehicles. So much quieter, no fumes, kids were playing tag in the street between sections. Just generally more pleasant.
That’s not how parades are supposed to work… Lol
Yeah but parades are generally incredibly boring so someone might as well have fun
Then why go? Lol
I loved parades when I was a kid. Marched in some in high school, and have attended many. I find Dram and Draught is a good place to watch (almost) the parade. I guess that’s not great for kids though…
“In the absence of vehicular traffic, young pedestrians were able to activate the unoccupied sections of roadway.”
Did I say it right that time?
lmao yes much better!
All I hear is “alright kids, let’s go play in traffic”
Its not that large of an event, but the annual Over the Edge Special Olympics fundraiser will be a little different this year.
For several years, participants have rappelled from near the top of the Wells Fargo building. This year it has been moved to the Pendo building on Hillsborough Street. It will be a much shorter rappell at this building.
I’ve been a volunteer for the last 3 years, and its been a lot of fun. I think there is usually a 5k run associated with it as well. Its always brought a fair amount of foot traffic to Fayetteville Street for a day and made great use of the plaza on the side of the building. I hope they can continue to keep this one going and have success at the new venue.
I think Raleigh could host an Olympics in the future, to think of it we do have the venues to pull it off, we’re only lacking commuter rail. But with the swimming pools at State, UNC, Duke. And of course they have basketball arenas and track and field Raleigh sure could host an Olympic game someday. I was just thinking about it, if Atlanta did it we sure could. Dix Park could be the Olympic festival area. What’s your thoughts? I don’t have time to explain my case but if you ask question I could answer them for you, in a way I’ll be sorta stating my case through that.
Throughout the past few years, I’ve thought very similarly. The IOC wants hosts in the future that have a chance of being more sustainable and not spending a lot of money (that’s how LA and Brisbane got theirs). Due to the universities, we have many of the required venues. Yes, some of the venues are dated and we don’t have all of them, but when you have 3 counties to spread the event throughout, it is quite different cost-wise. Plus, we have all those dorms so you don’t have to worry about an entire Olympic village. Raleigh could build a new baseball stadium while Durham builds a new aquatic center and spread costs around.
We have much lower odds of going into bankruptcy and I feel we’d also have a better long-term usage of certain venues. In fact, look at UNC. They’re looking at replacing the Dean dome. Having an Olympic Games will get people on board for that, and we could see their old arenas modified. Both of their old arenas are located next to an indoor long course pool, meaning either could be turned into a high-capacity Olympic pool for swimming/diving.
Didn’t say Raleigh I also said Fruhsm and Chapel Hill. I’m getting dragged on Reddit right now.
No thanks. Olympics are a money loosing event for just about every host city. Some cities take decades to recover. Montreal and Athens in particular. And it often leaves a host of venues that are built for 2 weeks of use, and then go into disrepair because lack of use / funds.
I think this is a horrible idea.
Okay I have more ideas in future post I’ll have one at 8 tonight
Sorry didn’t mean to sound harsh. Your ideas are fine, I just don’t agree with this one.
We’re hosting the World University Games soon, which is about right for a city of our size (and lack of tourist infrastructure).
I’m a huge fan of the Olympics, but the summer games go to world megacities for a reason.
(And there’s a good reason Montreal, Rio, and Athens, with their reputations for government sleaze and mismanagement, are the ones that have the biggest financial shortfalls - the LA, Seoul, and London games were all great for their host cities)
Okay I like the feedback now the next what if question is could Raleigh host an RNC or DNC. I have a case for this Houston didn’t have transit nor was the astrodome downtown when they hosted the Republicans in 1992. Nor was the airport nearby we have similar transit issues. So if H-Town hosted an event like that could Raleigh do it. Now in 2028 they’ll be hosting the GOP once again. Yes we lack some hotel rooms but I think it isn’t far fetched of an idea what’s your thoughts?
Looks like Chattanooga, TN will host the IBMAs 2025-2027!
