Midtown vs. Downtown

I dig it but I’m putting this one in the “I’ll believe it when I see it” bucket. I don’t know if the developer has ever done anything like this

Ps does anyone know whether there’s any kind of concrete plan to extend Sox Forks out to Hodges or is that just way out there still

I don’t see why they would. Atlantic Ave to Hodges is already there. I’d be highly disappointed if they built this prior to extending the bike lanes to the Greenway.

I used to live in the apartments at the end of Six Forks there, and it’s all just wetlands and floodplains, along with a huge elevation difference. I think it’d be very costly to extend it, especially since Atlantic connects the 2 streets right there. But I wouldn’t know if there were actually plans.

This is from 2012… but there were plans to extend Six Forks at one time… but that was also before they rerouted the Crabtree Creek Greenway b/c the massive wooden structure along the steep cliff was failing.

At one point I saw a map showing a future 6-forks connection to Capital. I think it may have been in the Mid-Town Master Plan. But I don’t think it’s more than a long-range idea at this point.

The Midtown version of the West Street Extension :upside_down_face:

BRING THAT BACK!!! There needs to be much more connectivity from the new Iron District/Six Forks “Midtown” district to Capital Blvd/Mordecai area. Like even more than just extending Six Forks.

What I posted above is actually different from what I remember from back in the day. I thought I actually went farther north and connected around the used car lots (one of which was formerly the Raleigh heliport for a short time (Raleigh's First Heliport Spinning Up Operations) ). I’ll keep digging and see if I can find a map.

It’s a density connection.

The funny thing is, it would be so easy.

Sidewalks down Whittaker mill to a crossing over Atlantic (the bridge is probably dead so just a crosswalk). Sidewalks from RIW to the greenway and a pedestrian bridge across the creek to a greenway connection. That would connect probably 90% of the foot traffic in this area.

I worry that by making this a priority for BRT north that we would sacrifice making these easy changes for potential large changes in 2040.

I think several of the other planning documents I’ve seen keep that, but I wasn’t sure if that had any real momentum behind it. FWIW I’m not sure that would add much other than connectivity from Midtown directly to Capital, and the costs of construction/planning are going to be enormous. Probably not really worth it.

If it were not for the HUGE amount of wetlands and floodplains and the environmental mitigation that building through it would require, it probably would’ve been built by now. But all that (plus a new big bridge over Crabtree Creek), will cost a bunch more than the city is likely to find worthwhile for the benefit. I’d expect federal regulators responsible for permitting would strongly question the Purpose/Need of it, seeing as there are nearby parallel roads (Hodge, Highwoods, etc) that already provide that connectivity between Atlantic and Capital.
Widening & upgrading Hodge would be both cheaper and more likely to sail through the permitting process.

Was at North Hills this morning.

Oh fancy. Fun fact…it was founded in Raleigh.
I won’t be shopping there because I neither golf nor aspire to look like I do.

Photos from last night.

Separate side note. I don’t know how long this has been going on, but I noticed a few weeks ago it appears that they have cops posted outside with their lights flashing. I saw the one in the photo below and one at Target. A few weeks ago is when I noticed the one at Target. Evidently even North Hills requires security.

Looks like Austin domain almost just more corporate mini city look. Can wait for the day North Hills open up a luxury spot.
