Here is an article from Business NC magazine about the new CHONC

What about the land in Apex surrounded by 540, US-1 and Hwy 55?
Did I miss something where it’s opposite day and “central” means “peripheral”?
I hear there’s good land up near Butner.
That’s Veridea. It does have 1100 acres. They recently added a few more annexations and have started removing some homes fronting 55. Supposedly they are starting up soon if they haven’t already.
What about the 87 acre Cary Town Mall site that Epic Games bought but has not done anything with? It has direct interstate access and around the area is developable land for other accessory buildings and such. Epic Games does not seem to be interested in developing it now.
Funny you ask, TBJ decided to answer your question with this “Breaking News”
Plans for massive Cary HQ withdrawn
AI summary:
Epic Games has officially withdrawn its plans for a massive headquarters campus at the former Cary Towne Center site, raising uncertainty about the property’s future. The company’s rezoning request, initially filed in 2021, was pulled due to inactivity. Epic had planned to transform the 85-acre site into a mixed-use district featuring office space, retail, and a hotel, but no progress has been made since demolishing most of the mall.
Despite CEO Tim Sweeney’s past comments about the need for a new headquarters due to the company’s growth, Epic never submitted updated plans to the town. Meanwhile, the company has been investing in renovations at its current headquarters instead. Epic originally purchased the property for $95 million in 2020, but its long-term intentions for the site remain unclear.
Now they’ll have room for a Wegmans and an IKEA. Oh wait…
Lol that site is somewhat cursed. RIP Cary Towne Center, the plans of a Top Golf, Ikea, & Epic Games HQ.
What I would do for them to move their HQ into downtown Raleigh and build some sort of public store/game experience, specifically a VR experience. Would be a legit tourist attraction.
I think this news of the withdrawal of Epic Games plans is related to the Children’s Hospital. With Fenton across the street it could cause that to build out a lot faster as hotels, apartments etc will likely be built near this hospital.
As for Epic Games they should buy the old Citrix building for pennies on the dollar and move some of their jobs there downtown.
I think it’s just a coincidence and their plan just expired. Cary has rather short timelines about how soon filed plans lapse – edit: six months for rezoning applications! Their real estate guy left in the Sep 2023 layoffs, so we’re past one year without any updates.
I’d forgotten that PBS NC wants to move out of its 108-acre RTP campus, which happens to be (1) owned by the state, (2) surrounded by Alexandria REIT owned land, with access from four-lane Moore Dr., (3) recently rezoned. The site is large enough to develop in phases while PBS NC builds out elsewhere; the two smaller buildings at the southwest corner of the site (NCSEAA and a day care) are already vacant.
That looks like Durham County… thought the reporting was that they had narrowed their search to Wake County.
Its going to be on SAS controlled land
Gonna have to change the thread to “This ain’t your mama’s SASsy CHoNC” now…
Wasn’t this just what everyone here has been speculating? I thought that the actual media hasn’t been any more specific besides it being in the Triangle (other than some vague characteristics).
If they put in Durham Co. after saying that they want to put it where the growth is, then they lied.
NC said in the Triangle and needs to serve the state as a whole and be accessible. Yes RTP Durham County side would fit that criteria. I have had said it should be between I-885 and I-440 off I-40 and yes that does includes some of Durham County. If this PBS site could be acquired at a good price it might make sense.
Wonder if Kaine could/would/should donate land from downtown south for CHoNC and jump start that development…swap out offices for medical center, or maybe conversely, CHoNC might require nearby medical offices and fill that up fast? Either way, still room for tons of residential just like there is around Rex and Raleigh Duke hospitals. Cant get much closer to interstate access than that development area.
