NCSU Developments

I’m not sure that is going to happen. NC State would most likely want to rebuild the stadium and arena so they could be close together and not 10 miles away from each other. That’s if they even move out of PNC. Also I believe that the commuter rail and BRT improvements will change the feel of that portion of town once it’s built.

I think this is a lot fewer people than we think. There’s a vocal faction here that laments the location, but I don’t think there are many at NCSU that dislike the efficiency of PNC & Carter Finely. Most certainly not for Carter Finley, as @clairebertt noted upthread, the tailgating in it’s current
location is a feature.

I’m most certainly of a different generation because I have absolutely no idea what you are referring to. When I went to State, everyone went to these two places. They were always packed (pun intended), and they were especially crowded on game days when the men’s bball team played at Reynolds.

went with my family to both all the time, and later years with my wife.

Assumptions that the names made your friends think that these were two gay bars?

I never recall them being anything but normal collage beer and pizza hangouts. Went to them any times in early 70’s while at state.

The football stadium location is awesome. Great tailgating. Many on campus stadiums have crappy pre game experiences because parking is all over the place in piece meal format. The fact that it is 2-3 miles off campus is irrelevant for the students because your talking 6, maybe 7 Saturdays per year. Distance from campus had zero negative impact. Made it better.

The basketball arena location is an abomination. Should be on campus. Should have never left Reynolds IMO, but I see why they did it. Reynolds is a great location. Hillsborough St was packed with activity on game days.

Back in the 80’s, Two Guys and Brothers were crowded and nobody thought anything about the names. They were restaurants, not bars.

You can imagine how awesome tailgating was before PNC and any of the paved lots, save the one one on the press box side. When we were into rocket building as a kid, that is where we went to shoot them off.

You had me at “they should’ve never left Reynolds”, that arena is too small for both teams’ fan bases imo.

Would have been nice if NCSU had removed the parking deck to east of Reynolds (or buried it underground) and build a new arena there. Even having thoughts of removing Reynolds should be punish by hanging from highest beam in Reynolds.

The traffic would be horrible before and after every game. Complete gridlock.

There were 14k+ attending games for decades in Reynolds. I don’t ever recall gridlock. Heavy traffic on campus, yes. People parked all over campus and off campus, and it took awhile for the crowd to disperse.

14k seems like a good size for them too. Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to facility size. Finding that balance of getting sellouts most nights is best for atmosphere. Can’t imagine they fill PNC most nights, right?

Reynolds never held 14K for bball; it was more like 12K and change.
I LOVED going to games there since it was so intimate and loud. It was like Cameron Indoor in that way, but larger. It would get deafening during key games. The 83 game against UNC was one of the loudest that I can remember. Now that I think of it, my hearing issues are probably related to that building.

You are right, 12.400 was basketball capacity.

At one point in time, and for many years, it was the largest on-campus bball coliseum, and more cumulative people attended basketball games there than any other venue in the nation. When I was in school, I think that the number was around 6 million. I could be wrong about that though.

When it opened, and I think until Madison Sq Garden 3 (current one) opened it was the largest basketball area on the east coast!
It use to get soooo loud. Those long long end sections with the aluminum bleachers - if they wanted to purposefully design a screaming loud place they couldn’t have done better job. I was at that UNC game in '83. I am sure my hearing is damaged for my years in Reynolds. That an listing to Blondie with headphone and the volume cranked to 11.
The other thing that sticks with me about the “Old Barn” was the smoking, lol. You couldn’t smoke in your seat, but you could in the concourse. After half-time you could hardly see from end to end for the cloud os smoke hanging in the air.

I agree @atl_transplant , bigger is not always better and that is certainly a lesson I think teams learned in the last decade or so. I’d rather be with or watch a smaller crowd that fills the stadium or arena.
I’ve only been to PNC once, and it was not sold out, but the lower bowl was full and that atmosphere was great. I am unsure what State is drawing out there the last few years.

My granddad was a student at NCSU when Reynolds Coliseum was built in the 40s, and I was a student at NCSU in the 90s when the last men’s game was played there before going to PNC.

I had a court side seat for a NCAA semifinal game. Was running a TV camera in far left corner of court in relation to front entrance… Got all the noise (sometimes had hard time hearing directors instruction via headset) and up close to the action. That was in 72+/- a year, will have to dig out TV pass that I keep.
