North Carolina Freedom Park

Storm drainage. Will be completely buried. Maybe an access cover on the top might stay exposed?

They’re digging up the leg of the park that extends along Wilmington

New article from the N&O detailing what’s currently happening with the park and what’s next:

Apparently archaeologists uncovered remains from a stone foundation wall part of the house that was previously on the site. It was owned by Thomas Devereux Hogg, who enslaved 18 people. The park is expected to be completed in 2023.

My vote would be to use those stones/foundation remains as a foundation for a new statue honoring formerly enslaved people that essentially built NC’s economy on their backs in those days. The ultimate tribute to them/“F*** You” to the former slave-owner.

Still digging. Behind the excavator there’s a huge pile of those concrete blocks for the drainage system that have yet to be installed.

Is the state using this construction as an opportunity to mitigate storm run off for the buildings around it?

It’s becoming a more structured hole in the ground

It feels like a true construction site now. Concrete pour yesterday, lots of cinderblocks getting put in place, more heavy equipment everywhere.

A little update

I saw gardeners working on the very pretty plantings at the little NC Victims Memorial (I actually have no idea what victims it’s memorializing) on the Lane Street side, and that got me investigating why it’s outside of the construction fence - looks like it’s going to stay largely as-is - you can see the old style materials in this rendering:

Kind of a shame, it’s pretty nondescript and the new materials look so much nicer. Feels like it could have been integrated.

7/18 UPDATE (since no more than 3 posts in a row): Cladding is getting installed!

Thanks for the updates, especially the pics! They are appreciated. (And now that I’ve posted, you can post more ).

I actually snapped one last week and forgot to share. We have walls that show the wide walkways somewhat. Still lots of dirt.

Big things around the corner… the beacon will be installed end of the month, shipped to the site in two 40ish’ segments. The first few precast site walls have been fabricated.

Update:

Not a brilliant picture by any stretch, but there hasn’t been much movement this month. They pulled the first few precast panels off where they’d been installed and stacked them in the back of the site, and not much else has changed. I guess there have been some delays from @elevatoroperator 's timeline

I heard there were some quality control issues with the first batch of precast. Haven’t checked in on the beacon timeline.

This is cool, I like it. From afar it looks like the college football championship trophy.
