I did an extended walk today (nearly 10 miles), and snapped some views that I hadn’t previously seen from Dix.
Out of all the beautiful artwork in the world, somebody thought this was nice to buy into?
City of Raleigh has bad art taste. There’s so many murals and art pieces around the city that make me ask “why?”.
I’m continuously jealous of Cary, and what they did with Cary Park. The art is perfectly curated, great architectural moments, amazing landscape, perfectly thought out amenity spaces, a just all around perfectly executed park design. I feel like Dix Park will never hit that “wow” moment like Cary Park did for me.
This one doesn’t really bother me. I think it’s something different. Not sure about that cell phone tower on Capitol Blvd.
There is some really cool stuff at the art museum park. Would love to see some of that type stuff at Dix.
Yeah I’m with you, I think it’s nice. In general I think Corten steel is a beautiful material.
Cary’s park has beautiful art (the cardinal playground is perfect), does its job really well, and in general feels a bit overstuffed and overlandscaped to me. Dix is a nice counterpoint - much more natural and relaxed.
Cary went big in a small space…Dix is taking the ‘Raleigh skyline’ approach - not too much, not so tall, not so fast…LoLs
Personally, I wish the artist had gone with verticality here rather than the stretched out form chosen - like for example, one of his other works…
Homie, let them finish building at least a single section of the park, first lmao. You like the downtown Cary park because it’s fully completed. Dix has barely just begun. The Play area they’re currently working on alone will rival Cary’s entire park.
This .
Scroll up and look at the aerial photos
Now I really like this and jealous we didn’t get some of his other work. I’m sorry but the current piece just looks like a bunch of drainage pipes to me. But hey art?
I know I’m all grumpy cat. But the artwork we’ve gotten so far at Dix Park just feels so random and not well curated. Like we have those statues with the pointy noses & wings, the drainage pipes, and the incoming wooden gnome statue thingy. It’s just so random lol.
@Jake I shall hold out hope! I really want this project to succeed and I think Cary Park set a quality on what future Dix Park projects should strive for. I’m hopeful there will be some nicely done areas in the park down the road! But I have to criticize the things added over the last couple years have been executed with what seems a tight budget in mind. For example the dog park area looks like any normal field with a chain linked metal fence. Unless this is a temporary dog park?
The traveling ‘wings’ exhibit was cool! I’m hopeful Dix will evolve following the Gipson phase and we’ll ‘up our game’ on the art installations moving forward but yeah…so far the moves like the dog park are on par with how we ‘temp’ our way through things.
Stone houses turned out nice. Perhaps ‘Attun’ will generate a following or have more landscaping added afterwards to create a more finished feeling around it…?
As far as the Dambo_trolls - similar thing, siting the work along with a unique ‘expression’ of place are important as there are quite a few of those in different markets at this point. There are some cool ones, we need ours to say ‘Welcome to Raleighwood, we have the finest trolls’…
The Cary Park, like the town itself, feels fake to me. Total design masturbation. Every design idea ever conceived smashed into one city block.
Yes, everything in Dix is essentially temporary until the master plan is completed… which will be like another 20 years hahahaha
This looks like a bunch of rusty oil drums piled up in a field. I’m not much of an art connoisseur though. At least slap some paint on those things.
Yup. The approach where a bunch of cool ideas are thrown around and then 15 years later, 90% of them didn’t happen. And no impact is made because the pace makes the new stuff unnoticeable.
Edit “this distinctive building.”
I would legit love if they painted it that color (or any color, honestly)
