Cool take on Raleigh from one of my all-time favorite hockey players and a Hurricanes legend. He was on the Cup team and shares why visiting players don’t always get the best impression of the city - most just see North Hills and leave. Mike Commodore had good things to say, but that’s because he actually lived here. Didn’t know where else to drop this, but check out this video - pretty interesting.

Yes this is a known thing. They do surveys of NHL players every year and we score low on favorite away cities for opposing players. Winnipeg always scores the lowest but it’s basically the North Pole lol.
Away teams stay at the Renaissance in NH every time. Maybe this has changed since the Westin in Brier Creek opened, but if they stay at the Westin that certainly wouldn’t help with the Raleigh sentiment either. Until we have the Omni downtown, there’s no option downtown better than the Renaissance or Westin for what visiting teams want/need. The unknown hotel near Mira could be another option eventually (I guessed Westin based on the renderings but now thinking Reverb by Hard Rock…surprised no one tracked that one down yet, you can basically see the design and hotel chains usually keep a consistent look. Those are my guesses).

Honestly, I think we rank low because of the away facilities at the arena primarily. SOME teams spend extra and go to Umstead like I know Nashville at least used to do

That’s definitely a reason too. Will be cool to track how the sentiment changes over time with the renovations and maybe the teams staying downtown too.
