Police and crime in Raleigh

Hell, RALEIGH has dealt with this in the past. Any NCSU Alums remember the Brent Road parties back in the day??? College students would come from ALL OVER including out of state to be there. NC State (and the City?) have all but curtailed that into the Pack-A-Poluza event on Hillsborough Street now. It is much more tame and a lot of the negative issues (underage drinking, vandalism, etc) from Brent Road were addressed giving way to a much more organized and age appropriate event that has made the Brent Road parties a memory.

Regarding Austin, I’ve purposely visited 6th Street in the daytime(dirty 6th east of Congress) when I was recently there. I have zero desire to replicate what’s become of it. It’s desolate, smelly, and filled with unsavory folks loitering during the day. I even saw human feces on the sidewalk. NO THANK YOU!
Having an entertainment district is one thing, but having uncontrolled spring break type partying primarily on late weekend nights is certainly another animal altogether.
There are a lot of good establishments that also include drinking on Glenwood, but an increasing number of these places aren’t contributing anything to the district all 7 days a week and at different hours of the day. I say yes to places like Hibernian, the Beer Garden, Tin Roof, the escape rooms, and some others that are more multifaceted businesses that add to both the entertainment district and the daily lives of this densely populated district. I’m even good with some of the smaller established neighborhood bars that have focused on business throughout the week, but something has to give regarding what happens many late weekend nights.
I know that the neighborhood can transition from this mess because I’ve seen it happen elsewhere. It needs balance and we need the political will of our city leaders and staff to steer us in that direction.

I don’t think we should shift the blame to the type of businesses on Glenwood S because 5000 teens wanted to come to a specific section of Raleigh and raise hell and engage in criminal activity. This happened outside of the businesses in the street and not inside of any particular bar. The same thing recently happened at Birkdale Village in Charlotte which is a relatively upscale family oriented outdoor mall and park like setting with residences all around.

The enforcement mechanism in play by RPD and the repercussion for such activity is to blame. Engage in adult activity and you should be treated like an adult.

The teen takeover was the problem this past weekend, but there are problems many other weekends as well when there aren’t takeovers. I live this every weekend, and It’s not just about these teens this one time.

It’s weird 190k people can pack downtown for several hours while drinking and nothing happens, but a couple thousand “teens” pull this crap.

A dress code isn’t going to stop shootings at Briar Creek and a gas station on capital. A curfew implemented with parents and “teens” being charged will be the only thing to stop this. If suddenly there’s an officer on every corner asking for your ID and subsequently a conversation with an officer, kids will think twice about loitering aimless outside causing problems.

Teens under 18, yes, but those between 18 and 20 are adults who can’t get into adults only businesses.

What is the deal with the teens takeovers? I have 2 teens and they did not even mention anything about this.

Are teens just bored these days with nothing better to do? I don’t know. Maybe I’m just old.

That’s a good sign. Either your kids are not part of these online groups, or they wisely chose not to participate. Consider it good parenting and a win/win! :+1:

To be fair, I doubt many of the teens who attended the teen takeover asked their parents for permission before going.

No doubt, but parents still have a responsibility for their children. There is a difference though between parents who were lied to by their children and those who enable them.
That said, there are tech tools that parents can use with their teenagers that allow parents to track their whereabouts. My brother uses find my friends on iPhone to keep up with his teens.

Mayor Cowell is mentioning a curfew, like some other cities have instituted. There’s a press conference tomorrow. One report said many of the participants were from out of town.

I’d like to know what social media these teenagers are using to coordinate.

Either that or they sneaked out of the house and we had no idea. :open_mouth:

I will ask them if they knew anything about it. I am curious.

I’m curious what “out of town” actually means. Are we talking as close as Garner and Cary, or are we talking from outside of the county and other cities like Durham, Fayetteville, etc.

Here is a model for curfew from a neighboring City. I’d like to see the curfew be enacted up to 17 years old and something about penalizing the parents if their teens don’t comply: Teen curfews work? Fayetteville leaders closer to reinstating youth curfew | abc11.com

Wilson, Rocky Mount, Ahoski, Snow Hill … - all those teens attracted by the lights and excitement of the big city. It would be interesting to know.

From what I’ve heard, there’s been a lot more loitering and underage ppl who don’t go into any of the businesses all around dt (looking at you too, goraleigh station) than before covid. Ideally, anyone under 21 should have no business being out on glenwood after 10 unless they’re working. Not sure if you can enforce curfew for under 18-20 yr, but if the problem is ppl who are there just to start sh*t, then idk what else to do besides arrest for loitering and prowling well before things get out if hand :man_shrugging:

It sounds like “hanging out at the mall” or “cruising Main Street” back in the day. Except way more toxic and way more violent. I agree The Mayor and Council need to get a handle on this. We don’t need to get the rep as the “easy” hang out city in NC.

They’re not going to be able to enforce a curfew for 18-20 year olds specifically because they are adults.
17 and below? Absolutely.
I’d also like to see the city disperse crowds from the streets after bar closing times. Folks loitering around Glenwood South until the wee hours of the morning is never going to turn out well.

Edit: just got a message from my aunt in the suburbs of Chicago asking me if I heard about the teen takeover in Raleigh. SMDH

North Carolina General Statutes §160A-198 says “A city may by an appropriate ordinance impose a curfew on persons of any age less than 18.” (In the statutes, “city” is taken to mean any municipality including those styled as towns (e.g. Cary) or villages (e.g. Pinehurst)).

There is a separate provision, §166A-19.31, for curfews during declared emergencies. A process is specified. Those curfews can apply to anyone.
