It includes more than housing that first year if you read the article it includes behavioral health and help with jobs. It doesn’t sound too bad when you throw all of that in. And you take into account getting these people into stable housing. Yes, some of them may backslide. But the hope is that many of them won’t. I applaud the County and the COC for doing this.

It will be interesting to see how this works in coordination with the likely veto override (due to loss in potential federal funding if not passed), of HB437 [ House leadership vows override on homelessness legislation ]. The timeline here is 18months and there are likely to be extreme changes to how these encampments operate during that time and criminal classifications around the encampments and centers.

Has been in the works for a long time. The 111 W Hargett building dates from 1951, with extensive modifications since. It’s called the Martin building but I don’t know why. The N&O and McClatchy used it for a while. Has been retail at various times.

Maybe one day the City will invest in a public safety center for our fire & police that was not built pre-civil rights movement, the Vietnam & Korean wars, watergate, the 1st black president…

The city has budgeted and built new police and fire stations and facilities. For fire, the new station 3 just opened, station 15 and 1 are in design phase. For police, the city budgeted for a new evidence facility and invested to renovate and upgrade the new headquarters downtown.

The Wake County Arrests/Mugshot website is currently planned to be deactivated August 17th. You will be forced to access it through a public kiosk in the Public Safety Center. The message on the disclaimer page states:
Notice
Effective August 17, 2026, this website will be deactivated. All information currently available on this portal will be accessible on a public kiosk located in the main lobby of the John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center, 330 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC.
This lobby is open Monday-Friday, 8:30a-5:00p, and closed on Wake County approved holidays.
Questions concerning this change may be submitted via telephone to 919-255-7369.

I wonder if Wake County Mugshots & Crime | Facebook will still work.
They’ll have to physically go down to the public safety center and download the images to a thumb drive, so I guess if they are dedicated enough, they can do it.

Supposedly this is to comply with the Second Chance Act, which makes record expungements easier for those found not guilty or have dismissed charges. Unfortunately Raleigh/Wake County residents will be less safe because of this. The site is the reason, for example, we know about the numerous arrests of the man who killed the Ravenscroft teacher and the dude who has roamed Glenwood South harassing/threatening people for the last two decades.
