But it’s fine down there, no issues. Just harmless teenagers shooting TikTok videos in parking decks…
Meanwhile, how is this not an obvious step for City Council to take?
There’s 100 damn vacancies. Double their pay for all I care.

Everyone says pay police and teachers, and EMTs etc. more. They deserve it. Everyone bitches about tax increases.
What to do?
Eh, police funding is a live wire on the left. That said, I think it’d get enough support to pass in Raleigh.
Increase taxes. They do it for streetscape improvements that never happen and a park that will be done in 50 years. I think police salary increases, spread out across the population of Raleigh, to protect Raleigh, is not that hard.
I’m on the left and all the Defund the Police crap is simplistic at best and mostly just idiotic. If people are afraid of seeing cops around, they can hang out where there are no cops. I’m sure that’ll be a lovely place. But I’d prefer downtown Raleigh and other high-investment/densely trafficked areas of the city have a police presence: to functionally make things safer, as a deterrent, and for the appearance of safety that allows people to feel comfortable visiting, opening businesses, and investing. This is just my opinion, but it’s from someone on the left who is more concerned about results than optics and hurt feelings.
Hey, I’m probably a shade to the right of you politically so I fully agree. But it feels like every time someone talks about police funding and getting homeless and loitering-with-intent groups out of city centers, the internet as a whole jumps down their throat for being some kind of fascist.
Yup, raise their pay. I’d like to see us paying more than Cary. We’re offering 20% less than Cary. That means Cary is going to get better police officers and have fewer vacancies. If our best police officer gets an offer from Cary, he’s leaving.
Raise taxes or find the money. Stop making public safety political. Last summer did a pretty good job of highlighting that we can’t expect society to police itself.
Agreed. But I’d like to see our so-called leaders ignore angry folks on the internet to make sensible policy for the entire city. There’s always some people who are unhappy, and they very much love the echo chamber of the internet. But to be a leader means making the best decisions with the available facts, not trying to make everyone happy or yourself more popular.
I realize I’m posting too much in a row, so I’ll stop and let other people talk. But that’s another good point. Not paying your police well means that you’re often left with the worst cops, just like any other job. If you actually want good cops, you need to pay for them. (This isn’t to say the cops who are sticking around because they love their city or are loyal to their job are bad cops.)
“If we want good city services and we want low taxes, we need to consider raising our density to pay for the city services.” - Dallas City Councilor

The majority of us acknowledge this but it’s worth mentioning again.
How about suggestions for fixing this oppressive economy. Stop the filthy rich from bringing drugs in over the border and prescribing bs in hospitals. It would also help to keep a close eye on companies like Johnson and Johnson, United healthcare, and BCBS, etc. These companies make trillions of dollars each year off exploiting the working class!!!
Besides the racist and classist culture this country is built upon, the homelessness you see everywhere suffer from drug abuse and mental issues. Plain and simple. Guess what. Raleigh is there home too! To think that you can just sweep away the problem is idiotic!!! That’s why it keeps coming back!
Building more homeless shelters and rehab centers would help Raleigh tremendously. I’ve witnessed this being effective many times. So stop talking about it. Be about it!
How about decreasing the budget kickbacks that our incredibly suspicious politicians enjoy. A possible criminal audit may help our anemic police force downtown.
^ Will add that if you’re not paying your police force well, you’re going to get what you pay for - officers (esp. uniformed officers, but also detectives) with less education/experience and who might be less inclined to take a fresh perspective on the policing profession. I tend to throw a very skeptical eye at capital funding for police militarization, but we should absolutely pony up to pay for a highly skilled police force that is at the forefront of a modern approach to crime prevention and crime solving.
It was never a good idea from the start imagine seeing so many psychologists killed in “wellness checks” instead of police arriving. But seriously, if the BLM Raleigh Uprising in 2020, and the 2022 Heddingham Mass shooting wasn’t a lesson than I don’t know what is. 6 cops got their the neck broken I mean they got their ass whooped, and during the massacre they literally had to use resources from another county I believe that county caught the suspect. We don’t have a police helicopter (we should), police should have Segway during events and we can close off Glenwood Ave. Also AR-15s and AK-47s to prepare for and I hope not the next mass casualty event.
You never know.
That’s how you know it’s an election year!
Edit: you’re not wrong, but local leaders have to work with what they have. Levy a county wide real estate transaction tax above $700k transactions to help fund homeless shelters. Drop all permitting fees on ADUs. Etc
There are Police-branded helicopters at the helipad at Tryon/Garner Rd (near the SHP training facility)
Also what on earth are you talking about cops getting their necks broken? Can you cite any sources?
I’m sorry it was a broken jaw. Several others cops got hurt anyway.
Major/and mid-size cities have police helicopters
My point is Raleigh had several major big city events over the past few years. I think Raleigh was a little unprepared. Of course, nobody wants a tragedy but you have to be ready. We should have swat teams and officers in armored bulletproof vehicles with gear to get people with warrants and apprehend mass shooters. I’m not asking for Raleigh to invest in military tanks or planes that drop bombs (though that would be nice), I’m asking if as the city grows we can’t be a neighborhood small-town police force we have to be a big city and prepared for the next big tragedy.
In what possible way would it be a good thing for the Raleigh Police to drop bombs on the city of Raleigh?
Glitter bombs on NYE?
Because of what he said
Jesus, I gave homie a second chance but I gotta mute him once again lmao. Just one unhinged/uninformed comment after another.
