Raleigh and Statistical Area Population

This came up on my Google feed this morning. Apparently Cary is the #7 city in the US for influx of millennials moving in from out of state and the highest ranking of the only 2 East Coast cities in the list’s top 10. Everything was ranked based on net migration.

Kind of not surprisingly to me, Denver is #1. All of this according to somebody called smartasset.com, and appearing on ABC 11 web site.

I’m surprised that Raleigh was not higher than Cary. Raleigh wasn’t in the top 10. I mean who knows maybe it was 11th but just interesting Cary was higher.

This was posted about a week ago in a separate thread, I think Raleigh was around the 11-14 range.

I wish they had done this by metro area instead of literal municipality

We’ve been tracking Millennials since, well, the Millennium. The oldest of them are 40 now, and many are settling down and having kids. The youngest of them are post-college at this point. That is of course if you are aligning to them being born from 1981-1996.
It’s not surprising to me that Cary shows up here, but given the plurality of rapidly growing municipalities in Wake County, I’d be interested in seeing it in county-wide stats.

Cary is Raleigh. Lol

It’s looking at net migration. Many millennials are also leaving. Sad but it must be said. The Triangle has always struggled with brain drain. I know many people my age that flung themselves to CA, TX, and CO.

Areas heavy in universities will always have some brain drain. Likewise Charlotte always appears high on the lists of gaining graduates, but that’s to be expected.

Yet the Triangle still has a more educated populace.

Yep. Which is why the brain gain/loss is a shell game of sorts. Not all places are starting at the same level.

When you have an oversized population of university students graduating each year, of course some of them are going to find work elsewhere.
Fun Fact: The idea of RTP was intended to stop the brain drain from the state. Not only did NC retain more of its university graduates, it created an inflow of highly educated adults that now make up one the most educated metros in the nation. I’d say that it works pretty well.

Raleigh Durham Fayetteville now up to the 24th largest media market by number of TV households. Up 3 spots from previous year. Having Fayetteville latch on here obviously helps but surprised by some of the cities such as Nashville, Indianapolis, Baltimore etc that we’re ahead of. By this measure we’re only slightly behind Charlotte (22) and St. Louis (23)

Did they recalculate how they count the numbers? That’s sizable jumps across the board from 2020.

I’m not sure. They didn’t provide any narrative but it looks like with the raw numbers, most areas saw a big jump. Raleigh just more than most, I’m guessing the jump is due to a lot of households that didn’t have TVs before the pandemic bought TVs while stuck at home. Coupled with our growth during the pandemic led to our jump.
Atlanta also moved from 10th to 7th ahead of Boston DC and Houston which is huge for them.

Nielsen market rankings are a big deal, especially when it comes to sports. They look at that more than they look at MSA/CSA totals.

Indeed, Raleigh’s market looks bigger than 18 other pro markets. We actually are the third biggest tv market with only 1 team in the Big Four I believe (Portland and Sacramento). Also Austin doesn’t have nearly as many tv’s as one would have expected.

Drumroll… 2020 Census Apportionment Results

NC 2020 10,439,388
NC 2019 est. 10,488,084

For comparison:
VA 2020 8,631,393
VA 2019 est. 8,535,519

GA 2020 10,711,908
GA 2019 est. 10,617,423

Notably, NC’s 2020 count is 1.52% below the 2020 estimate. AZ, DC, SC, NV also came in more than 1% below the estimate. I suspect Wake is safely above 1M.

Wow. So NC was overestimated big time for 2019. For any of you holding your breath for Raleigh to pass 500,000 in the Census, you can exhale now before you die of oxygen deprivation. It’s likely going to be that either Wake or Mecklenburg were wildly overestimated this past decade, or both. It’s going to look really bad if it was Wake, and Meck takes over again as the most populated county in the state. I guess we’ll have to wait?

NC overestimated, but we will still gain a seat in the US House, which is nice.
