They are killin the game, even in DTR Kane’s building has the most multi purpose use of any tower ever built downtown. Make this guy the default city and county planner.
I know I have asked this before, but does any one have an update on the Quail Corners Shopping Center expansion? It’s killing me that nothing has been done. Choate Construction finally put fencing around the old medical/office building across the street. Going to be great to finally get rid of that eye sore.
I heard before COVID the plan was to take over two residential lots (east along Millbrook) and expand the shopping center. I have not heard anything in about a year. My guess this is on hold due to COVID.
Good call. I think the final building height will be close to the current height of the tower crane jib. I believe they’re also raising the crane one final time for the home stretch! Tallest tower crane in the city since RBC/PNC?
Meanwhile in Midtown East, just south of Wegmans, Chick-Fil-A is planning a drive-thru only location where the Enterprise car rental currently is:

But what about all the traffic that’s going to generate?!?!?!
and it will generate a huge amount of traffic. When they built in my little town of 12,000 they were actually very well prepared and presented a solid traffic plan to the city council. It doesn’t clog our main street too much. We are preparing for the Starbucks to open across the street. That is also a drive thru model. There is no turn lane on this 4 lane street, and is about to cause a massive traffic head ache for my little village in the hills of Alabama.
Yeah, I was only half-joking about traffic. People will lose their minds about the traffic an urban building will produce, but look the other way when something like this pops up in a suburban community.
Gross. I hate drive thru locations. This one is even more ridiculous. It’s bad it will be a drive thru. It’s worse that it’s a drive thru only.
Ugh. They’ll kill it there and add to the cluster around CostCo…one more reason to stay away…
Drive through only? Good grief. I guess that’s a result of Covid. They have a non drive through one at NH.
Move to deny!

Ashley Christensen’s new chicken place will be in the same general area. I know where I’d go for my midtown chicken sandwich experience.
The one here in Boone often has cars backed up onto main street in front, even thought the drive through access is quite long. There is a side street (Astor in pic) that goes past the building then loops around back, past the far side and front to finally reach the drive thru window. But often is backup up on street in front of Applebee’s. A real pain in um back side. I’m sure Applebee’s and the hotel at end of Astor are really happy about it. I just hope there are restrictions with HUGE fines if they build it and it blocks streets.
lol i just graduated from app last year and man do i not miss having to go to that walmart or ABC store. my personal hell is driving 321 after 4pm
I’m the last one to ever complain about traffic concerns of developments. But that little area is frustrating as it is. Lots of people continue to try to make dangerous left hand turns exiting the Costco, instead of exiting in the back and turning left at the street light. At the same location, a surprisingly high number of sudden U-turns are made on Six Forks. I can’t imagine that small area with Chic-fila-a traffic and other geniuses trying to narrowly fit in left hand turns on that side also.
If the city is serious about turning that area around Wegmans/Costco into a de-facto extension of North Hills with density and a real presence along Crabtree Creek, a drive-thru only Chick-Fil-A would be diametrically opposed to that vision, right?
I believe all Chick-fil-A’s have been drive only for the past year anyway. They have moved up to to 3rd in the fast food rankings and probably realized they are still quite profitable even without dining rooms. It will be interesting to see if more fast food chains start doing this more often.
Also to bounce off this. The drive through only locations also have two walk up windows as well.
