Raleigh Elections and Council Overall

I mean, they got 2562 signatures. Take a big hint. Pull the plug on LR. Russ Stephenson will never let it go - MAB was elected Mayor, twice. And withstood a LR recall effort. And withstood this debacle.

2562 signatures is a lot of signatures. It’s even more than I thought they’d get since they likely only canvassed single family homes. They would have gotten enough signatures if we had a bit more density.

I bet 80% of those signatures never even cared or were aware about the flipside of the “issue”. They signed because, well if these people are so passionate about it, it’s gotta be legit!

I give this failed exercise zero credit.

Wow 0.5% of Raleigh’s population agreed with them. Stunning success.

LR would rather waste their resources collecting signatures than spending those man hours actually making a difference in this city. Their sole purpose is to complain and never actually accomplish anything.

They need to change their name. Grievable Raleigh

honestly a council with Mitch Silver, Melton, and someone I’ve heard as potentially running for C (not public yet) is going to be a pretty kick-ass city council.

I’m curious if the person you’d heard about for district C has announced yet, or is still planning to do so this week. We have five candidates, maybe two or three who are actually serious. I’m not particularly excited about any of them.

Just noticed the current field for at large. I don’t see a good second option to vote for after Melton right now.

The person I had heard about isn’t running due to a work issue unfortunately.

Alas.
@dtraleigh Leo, did you serve on the transit board with Tolulope Omokaiye to form an opinion of her? She filed in the last couple of days and doesn’t have a website up yet.

:+1: Here’s a table being updated reguarly with who files. (Filing closes July 19): Airtable - November 5, 2024

Holy Moly, there are more people running for Dist C than mayor or at-large. :flushed:

I see on the East Ral CAC FB group that the Liveable Raleigh folks are doing fundraisers for her, so there’s that.

For a few months yeah. I disagreed with a lot that she had to say and frankly, I thought it strange that someone would serve on the RTA only to be against the expansion of transit in Raleigh. I guess that’s ok, if you are someone who is against Transit, you can serve and work to keep it in check. I dunno.

Either way, I felt like her motivations were more tied to development, land-use, and gentrification. Maybe she would really do better on the planning commission. Goes to show you that transit and land-use go hand-in-hand. When anyone says, “I support BRT but not TOD” then I think they don’t quite get what’s possible here.

Or you can watch for yourself.

Not that surprised, it’s an open seat and Corey (who is trying to win a mayoral race) has not anointed a successor (to the extent he can - but Weeks supported Corey and West supported Weeks, so it’s a change). Once you’re on, incumbency has significant adavantages.

Corey Branch out of the mayor race as of today.

Did he jump or was he pushed? Any more details?

N&O reporting it now. They mention he technically has until noon Friday if he wants to file for re-election to his current seat.

As for mayor, I thought the field was more crowded, but this certainly seems to clear a path for Cowell…

There are four candidates who have filed so far:

Janet Cowell, former Raleigh City Council member and state treasurer
Paul Fitts, mortgage broker
Eugene Myrick, community advocate
James Shaughnessy IV, pre-law student

Terrance Ruth, an N.C. State University professor, has also announced his candidacy but has not filed as of Wednesday morning.
