Raleigh Elections and Council Overall

To be fair, (and I’m not a fan of David Cox), he did ask if the renters lived in the study area because the study includes numbers of live/work/volunteer. He said he wouldn’t support “it” unless he knew how many lived in the study area. I don’t know why “renters” were specifically called out if his intent was to know the split of numbers from live, work, volunteer.

Raleigh mayor threatens City Council member with censure. ‘You do that,’ he retorts.

One guess as to which council member it was.

Haha. I like this exchange.

MAB: “Stop it.”

This year has taught me a ton. Although the contents of the squabbles are somewhat embarrassing, I agree that there needs to be more balance of opposing views within city council, and in government generally. We are quickly heading toward a monoculture, one size fits all style government and it’s quite terrifying if you let it be.

Anyways, what happened today? I can’t access the article even in incognito

The video embedded below happened; watch it straight from the source!

You could watch the N&O recording of the exact moment where the mayor decided she’s tired of David Cox being condescending to city staffers. But why do that when you could get to your own conclusions and form your own opinions?

For context...

…so that escalated quickly

That did escalate quickly and it sounded more like MAB bullying Cox than Cox bullying staffers, at least at that moment. I do find it hard to believe that there was no readily available information about decibel levels generated by a crowd of various sizes talking, and that we’d have to hire a consultant to figure that out.

Glad it passed, but it certainly did show a childish moment from important city leaders.

Seriously, though! If there’s a pattern of Cox-blocking city staffers, then I can see why MAB would get pissed. …but no one here who can open the article mentioned anything like that.

Yes, I think David Cox asks too many questions in bad faith and fights against Raleigh’s chances to grow in a smarter, more effective way. But I agree: this time, I think the mayor is in the wrong. This is the sort of thing that could be used against her next election cycle, so that’s kinda worrying.

As for the policy question, I agree. As someone working in acoustics (well, ultrasound… but close enough), my first thought was that, no, half of the experiments they mentioned are not necessary.

Click me to see why.

…this might mean you could correctly call out the committee for screwing up this noise analysis. I doubt even the most motivated person with a stick up their ass would go this far, but NIMBYs could use this argument to say outdoor restaurant seats should not be allowed downtown.

TL/DR: this argument could become a political and/or NIMBY problem if someone was motivated enough.

I’m still seeing the same paywall (using both Safari and Chrome).

I agree, it’s best to cover all of the angels when developing city codes. People will always look for a way around them so you have to cover all the bases like “where are you measuring from and to”. Leave a loophole and the city will be in court, or it could be your trying to make another code that already exists, or something that will have unintended impacts. We voted them to figure all that out with the city staff. They should fight like hell about it and then when done and it’s decided have a beer or wine together. This is not a kindergarten class. I used to attend the city council meeting in Chicago, now that is something to see. That stuff they pulled here was the first 5 seconds of a CHI council meeting, lol.

I would need more information. That said, MAB’s Bloomberg endorsement during the primary made me eager to find a replacement.

Wasn’t familiar with this guy, so I creeped his socials. Seems like he was or is buddies with Stef Mendell?

You did newsgathering, my man. You were newsgathering.
