Raleigh Elections and Council Overall

:salt: (This is a salt container)

If they do not know what they are voting for, should be removed NOW for failing to carry out their duties.

To be fair, this is not an obvious thing to spot on their website. They list a ton of “Partners” but don’t list anything about them other than a link to their site.

At least this was a “teachable” lesson for the council…

To be even fairer… is that really a good enough reason not to support a faith based clinic?

I think a thorough vetting should be conducted before granting $30,000 to any organization. Most City grants of this type are vetted by the city’s Human Relations Commission. Each applicant must come before the grants committee, with their financials, and present their case. The committee had days to discuss and research the applicant. Their recommendations are sent to the H R Commission and if approved, sent to the full City Council for their approval. But, the City Council has a pot of discretionary $, that they give to various favored organizations. This was an act and reaction by Councilor Crowder, who exposes herself as a weak leader. She’s managed to piss off both sides.

In my opinion, yes. The city shouldn’t fund conversion therapy. I’m probably generalizing the nature of how the funds are used but that’s my opinion.

To be fair the clinic itself doesn’t provide abortion or anti-abortion services nor does it practice conversion therapy itself. They merely are connected due to their common faith understanding. NeighborHealth does however provide a needed service to uninsured members of our community.

I personally don’t feel it’s a big deal as well because of this. Completely overblown story.

I agree. I don’t like Kay and I don’t want to post my feelings about the gay conversion abomination on a public forum, but let’s just say I have strong opinions. But this sounds like just an oversight and everyone makes little mistakes. I’m not holding it against her or the city council

I would be less inclined to hold it against her if she had not circumvented normal City procedures. My reading is that instead of using the normal budget process she basically asked for a special exception based on her recommendation for an organization she had not adequately researched. I don’t think she had any bad intent, but she made at least two bad decisions. Not following normal procedures and not doing her homework after she asked for an exception.

last campaign he also complained about all the money we’re spending on bike lanes.

Do we have a sense of who the biggest supporters of Commuter Rail at the municipal level are? It would be helpful to identify these candidates not just for Raleigh but for the rest of Wake county municipalities. That way, if we move forward with a rail-friendly County government, the local governments are also supportive.

Inspired by @chobbs, would anyone be interested in, and might be willing to help create, a questionnaire?

I’m thinking that 10 or so questions, compiled by this community, and sent to all campaigns might help, whether they answer or not. Outside of the 300+ registered members, we easily have hundreds more.

Anyone inspired to help with that? We could collaborate over email or some other way. (slack would get my vote)

Love this idea. Happy to help and can collab on slack.

This is a great idea. With an “organized” group of people, this idea can get some weight behind it. It gives politicians a quantitative number of voters that they can be seduced/influenced by. The problem is the organization part, and how someone does it.

Thank you sweet baby Jesus, it looks like Stef Mendell formally has a challenger:

Do we have a consolidated list of the candidates who have announced?

I would love to see a debate. How do we make this happen?
