Raleigh Elections and Council Overall

That really caught me off guard too. Is this man trying to imply that townhomes are scary??? I mean I know it’s Halloween season and all but… I don’t think any kids are going trick-or-treating dressed as a TOWNHOME

It’s been done before (at least for skyscrapers)…

tRuth is playing the big exclusionary tent political theory. He avoids any mention of LGBTQ issues, forfeiting the gay vote for the conservative black vote (such as Upper Room Church). Solid black vote + Liable Raleigh criers are his potential path to victory. MAB is popular with gays, moderate Dems & some Republicans that could bring themselves to vote for a Dem. MAB in a close one,

Was this a Freudian slip?

Oaks & Spokes has published a candidate questionnaire for mayoral and city council candidates. Not everyone answered it but it gives you some good background on where the candidates stand on multimodal transportation. Might be good to give it a read before you go vote!

I think you are spot on here

Thank you for this. I’m definitely reading through it. I’ll also be reading other things as well, but this is a good questionnaire.

Great in depth article on MAB and her vision for Raleigh.

Great article, thanks for sharing!

I thought this was a really good quote from Jonathan Melton:

Melton said the two groups that are complaining the loudest about increased density—residents of gentrifying communities and wealthy white homeowners—make strange bedfellows.

“They’re not actually aligned,” he argued. “They can’t be aligned, because the folks who are trying to throw up walls around their old, rich white neighborhoods and keep new types of housing out, they are funneling that [affordability] pressure into vulnerable communities like Southeast Raleigh.

“One of the strangest phenomenons I’ve experienced since I’ve been on council is how the people with housing have convinced the people without housing that the people who build housing are the problem.”

Apparently this approved measure doesn’t impact all streets inside the impacted area and specifically does not include Dawson and McDowell.

Isn’t this just a completely different action unrelated to the lowering of the speed limits downtown? The city is constantly lowering speed limits on the consent agenda, and I believe this is just another one of those. The action to reduce the speed limits to 25mph downtown (I believe inclusive of McDowell and Dawson) was already approved.

I think you’re right. I found a pretty interesting document that talks about the NCDOT funded study and it’s findings and subsequent recommendations. I’ll link here in a few.

See the board docs here.

And both attached docs are very interesting. The City Staff preso boils it down for you. All changes will be completed by Oct 31 and I’ve noticed several 24mph signs walking around town lately. I think even the Dawson/McDowell signaling has been reduced as well.

I’m pretty certain they are signed 25 now. Even at the prior speed limit - think it was signed at 30 -
25 was the right speed limit to maintain flow through multiple lights - if you were a speed hound, you were forced to brake down / stop and then continue again…which, of course some will still do bull-headedly
Then, northbound - once they hit the slingshot passing under the tracks, it’s back to freeway tactics…

According to the green boundaries of the 25mph zone, a portion of Capital Blvd extending up to Peace St. (green box)

So, speed reduction coming in and a softer exit. I think this was the existing reduction to 35, but 25 is a bit slower!

When I read it, the last sentence of what you posted was the most succinctly said and relevant comment in the entire article.

Just saw on Nextdoor that Livable Raleigh member(s) are misrepresenting themselves at polling sites. A voter went to Chavis this afternoon and stopped at the Wake County Democratic Party table and asked for a voter guide. After being handed the voter guide, the volunteer said she had an important addition and handed him a Livable Raleigh Endorsement List. She said that it differed from the Dem Party list but provided no other explanation of Livable Raleigh. If he hadn’t already been aware of the organization he said he easily could have thought it was an official addendum to the Democratic Party endorsed candidate list. He as well as I feel like this is a huge election violation. I hope he reports it to the Wake County Democratic Party and that this isn’t happening at other sites.
