Raleigh Elections and Council Overall

Passing along this message from a follower on Twitter. We’re going cross-platform here. :sunglasses:

If you would be interested in working at an early voting site in Raleigh and providing handouts to voters who are pro-housing and would continue many of this council’s policies please reach out to @UlmerNc on Twitter.

Very curious about what’s going to happen with this upcoming election. As much as all of us that follow this website like this council of “yes” and MAB, I have a feeling we’re in the minority with our views. I’m a little scared to see how many council seats are lost. MAB may be OK, but only because I don’t think she’s going up against anyone that can challenge her. Neither of the two candidates running against her have any name recognition. However I see a lot of recall Mayor Baldwin signs around Raleigh and I know the downtown business owners haven’t forgotten about the riots (Which they blame her for or at least the way it was handled)… Should be interesting.

If all these Livable Raleigh knobs win their campaigns, it’ll be yet another example of misinformation winning elections.

The council of No, which basically is Livable Raleigh in disguise, was mostly flushed out in the 2019 elections. I always say people have short-term memories so I’m nervous too but I’m hoping people remember and don’t bring that kind of council back.

people are easily motivated by fear, and livable raleigh folks are leveraging it well.

FWIW, former Mayor Meeker has a MAB sign up in front of his house. I take that as a good sign, but obviously not really indicative of anything.

We need to show up with suggestions because you know Livable Raleigh won’t hold back. Please, everyone reading this, take a minute to send your thoughts!

From INDY Week:

We are working on endorsements for federal, judicial, state legislative, and local races for our paper next week—if you have thoughts on who we should endorse, particularly in Raleigh’s mayoral and city council races, send 'em my way. jporter@indyweek.com

Does anyone have any good talking points, to write them, to support the current council?

The good news is that we have a lot of great changes that have occurred in the last several years, both to specific zonings and UDO updates. The odds that the council flips enough to undo any of that change is very low. Jonathan Melton will most likely win, as well as Corey Branch, David Knight, and MAB. With no incumbent Dist D is a bit of a toss up, so really pushing for Jenn Truman.

I’m of the opinion LR is a lot louder and larger appearing than they actually are in number. The wedge issues this year are inflation and housing (and abortion which doesn’t really effect local or at least it shouldn’t), so hopefully discerning readers of WRAL and N&O that see the sensationalized stories about “save our neighborhoods” will read between the lines and understand this is a group of entrenched locals that are just not happy with change, while they cry for “change” at the council.

N&O Endorsements.

They want MAB for mayor, Melton and Forte for at-large, Branch for district C and Jane Harrison for district D.

It’s crazy to see how there are so many “Dump Baldwin” signs but few if any “T. Ruth” signs.

I’ve seen a few “T.Ruth for Raleigh” signs - “clever”

I’m more and more certain that most of Raleigh doesn’t want to hear the Truth about the future…

Raleigh: Tell the truth!
Reality: YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
Raleigh: TRuth for Raleigh!
Reality: Ok here goes- the city is growing and will continue to grow whether you want it to or not-
Raleigh: NANANANANANANANANA I CAN’T HEAR YOU NANANANANANANANANA!

All I think of when I see that is Truth Social :face_vomiting:

Truth be told (lmao) - nowadays when I see political shit that’s plastered with random buzzwords like “TRUTH FOR ____” etc, I assume the opposite

On that topic: Candidate Questionnaire: Terrance "Truth" Ruth, Raleigh Mayor - INDY Week

One question/answer struck me immediately,
the question: One way Raleigh’s city council has attempted to address the city’s housing shortage is by allowing for more flexible housing options such as duplexes, triplexes, and quadraplexes in all neighborhoods in the city, eliminating certain zoning protections, and allowing apartments for zones along bus routes. Do you support this move to bring missing middle housing to the city and do you think it will be an effective policy for managing the city’s growth?

an excerpt from his answer: "Adapting current homes into duplexes should be encouraged in many areas, and efforts to increase housing density are necessary and should be pursued without the construction of apartments and foreboding townhomes in inappropriate areas.

BAM. Right there, plain-as-day NIMBY talk. “Yes, we need to add more density, just not in my neighborhood” DO NOT VOTE FOR THIS MAN!!!

Foreboding townhomes? Really?
