Was looking for a topic that covered this. I guess we can continue discussion here.

There was a couple of tables set up for an ā€œeventā€ where the City of Raleigh Parks division appeared to set up and answer some questions today about the future of the whitewater park. There was a FB event that advertised a bike from Horseshow Farm Nature Preserve to the Dam.
I didnā€™t meet up with the biking group, but a couple of friends I normally rode with and I went to check it out.

The concept was cool. Iā€™d be curious of the end result, but am sure it will take quite a bit of time.

I did end up riding my ebike up from Crabtree. I was able to get there in about an hour on the ebike. If I took the sidepath up Falls of Neuse Rd, it probably would have taken me 40 mins at the same pace. This led me to the thought: It would be nice if there was a bike path all the way to the Falls Lake swimming areas or if they would put up a swimming area near the dam. Iā€™m about 15 miles from Sandling Beach. A bike ride to the lake and back on the weekend wouldnā€™t be a bad thing. Iā€™m not really sure if ā€œswimmingā€ is currently not allowed at the Falls of Neuse river, but I always hear that the water quality isnā€™t great. I donā€™t know how different the water would be since itā€™s fed from Falls Lake. I know Iā€™ve seen people get in the water at Milburnie Park and thatā€™s further down the river.

I went to the Eno River Quarry for the first time this past weekend. Iā€™m not sure how clean the water is, but it looked pretty clean. If it is indeed cleaner, Iā€™d be curious what can be done to make the Neuse River clean.

City announced start of public input for the Big Branch Greenway connector. This will build a connector from Crabtree Creek Greenway ( near WF Rd) along Big Branch creek through Midtown Exchange, Eastgate park, Cedar Hills park, up to Sandy Forks.

More here: Big Branch Greenway Connector | Raleighnc.gov

Help Plan the Big Branch Greenway Connector!

When complete, the Big Branch Greenway Connector will extend from the existing Crabtree Creek Trail, near Wake Forest Road, to Sandy Forks Road. The greenway will traverse approximately 3.5-miles, primarily adjacent to Big Branch, and is proposed to connect to both Eastgate and Cedar Hills Parks. Help us plan this new addition to the Capital Area Greenway System by joining us at a pop-up event on August 6th, attending our in-person project open house on August 14th, participating in our virtual project open house on August 15th or by completing an online survey that will be open through the month of August. For more information on this project, please visit the project website.

Sweet! Thatā€™s a great idea

I love this connector, especially since it will go about 1/2 from my house. but this part is a bit lame.

ā€œNo improvements will be evaluated, as part of the Big Branch Trail project, for Segment 5 since existing sidewalks are in place along the entire segment.ā€

Segment 5 is Quail Hollow Dr. That street is plenty wide they could easily narrow the lanes and put a mulit-use path on one side. If they want to save costs just re-stripe and put some some planters (or similar) betwen the cars and the path. The existing sidewalks are too narrow and concrete and go bumpity bump while cycling.

Looks like thatā€™ll make it much easier to bike from North Hills/Exchange to Midtown East. and Crabtree. Nice!

Pretty mind-boggling that this project has a $4.5MM price tag attached to it for essentially implementing the first phase of this connection (crossing Wake Forest Rd between Crabtree Creek trail and Wake Towne Rd), a second phase (4 - from St Albans to Hardimont) plus some feasibility (wait for it everyoneā€¦) studies for segment 6 for future constructionā€¦
*Note : The (phase 2) Midtown Bridge is a CoR DoT project and the (phase 3) segment through Exchange is on DeWitt to complete.
Anticipated timeline 2026+ā€¦Good Gracias sakes aliveā€¦!

Yeah, the Quail Hollow section is the least exciting part of the plan, but, as you point out, it also seems like the part that needs the least planning. Itā€™s a too-wide, low-speed, low-density, city-owned road; it seems pretty straightforward to just add a multi-use path (MUP) on one side and call it a day. All the other sections have multiple other considerations to plan around (how much extra infra, number of bridges, right-of-way, and how much all of that will add to costs, etc.)

Another thought: Iā€™m not that up on the condition of Quail Hollow Dr, but will it need resurfacing soon? Maybe an eventual road diet or reconfiguration could be done here with money from the road budget during some eventual resurfacing instead of the greenway/parks budget.

I donā€™t know how often they repave, but itā€™s definitely has a patchwork of pavement. So maybe thatā€™s what they are waiting on.

But at minimum they need to restripe it like that section of Crabtree Greenway that goes along the road by the car dealership near Capital.

I assumed a thread about a Greenway was the appropriate place for this.
@svp this seafoam green epidemic has spread all the way to Paris!

OH NO. What have they done?? This is so tragic. I am having flashbacks of 1970ā€™s Gold and Seafoam (instead of Avocado) Green decor.

Guess what, that color palette is cool and stylish again

The open house for the Big Branch connector is this Wednesday. Having never been to an open house, would I miss anything if I showed up late (~5pm) or is it more of a casual thing?

I know thereā€™s a virtual open house on Thursday, but Iā€™d prefer to be there in person if possible.

Agreed. Why do we have so many NIMBY against cool/new color palates? Make Raleigh Seafoam Green Again!!

The phase 6 segment crosses Millbrook. Iā€™m on Millbrook often and live just off Quail Hollow. Iā€™m not sure how you get people safely across Millbrook. People fly down it and there are lots of curves with poor visibility.
