The Raleigh area is a top 5 metro in the U.S. for its tech impact on the local economy.

Ranking No. 5 in the nation, the tech industry in Raleigh-Cary makes up 16 percent of the local economy, according to the Computing Technology Industry Association’s 2025 State of the Tech Workforce report.

Tech layoffs hit one of Triangle’s largest employers

triangle layoffs are not confirmed.

you’d think the company that just paid 60 million dollars to sponsor our most successful pro sports team for the next decade would not then alienate its employees and their families in that particular market.

but who knows?

Yes correct and hopefully the Triangle will be spared.

Raleigh got the header photo treatment for this WSJ article. Gift article below. Too bad they got an outdated picture, not that the angle they used has changed much.

The subtitle: “Many younger professionals are finding luck launching careers in second-tier cities like Raleigh, Milwaukee and Birmingham, a new analysis show.”

Wolfpack fans, look away (NC St is mentioned in the next paragraph by the Raleigh Economic Development director). “Raleigh, once again, topped the list of cities with the most promising prospects for recent graduates. As part of the Research Triangle, its economy is fueled by an ecosystem of research institutions, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and other schools, plus science and technology companies.”

Is Birmingham a second tier city?

Speaking as someone that lived there, no. It is a strange addition to the list to be alongside Raleigh, Milwaukee, Baltimore, and Austin.

One of the great things about North Carolina is its temperate climate and diverse geography. With both beaches and mountains just a few hours apart, it offers easy access to outdoor recreation year-round. Its central location on the East Coast and quick flight connections make major cities like New York, Chicago, Miami, and Washington, D.C. easily reachable. In contrast, cities such as Austin, Milwaukee, and Birmingham often face more extreme weather and lack a central hub location. While these places will continue to grow economically and offer strong educational assets, the geography of North Carolina can play a meaningful role in distinguishing regions with otherwise similar advantages.

If the U.S. had a rail network comparable to those in parts of Asia and Europe, the East Coast corridor from Florida to Massachusetts would likely experience significant migration from the central states. Enhanced mobility would make it far easier for people to access abundant career opportunities and leisure experiences that are currently beyond reach for many.

What makes NC State’s omission in the article even more confounding is that NC State grads make up one of the largest shares of Cisco new grad hires, and they talk about Cisco in the article.

I am sorry I do not put Raleigh and Birmingham in the same league. Raleigh is growing much faster and Raleigh Durham together is much bigger than metro Birmingham and about the same size of Austin. Raleigh Durham and Austin would be the same tier. Birmingham would be one tier or so down from Raleigh in my book. Bham had to reinvent its entire economy after their steel and iron plants closed and now healthcare is the largest employer there.

Wake county alone is the largest county in the south, outside of Florida and Texas.

Wake County alone has more people than all of metro Birmingham. Additionally, the Birmingham MSA is physically larger than the Triangle’s entire CSA. So, yeah, Birmingham is NOT in the same category as either Raleigh and certainly NOT the Triangle.
