I am curious about the history of prominent Social Clubs in Raleigh. This is from my own research, and in no particular order. Mistakes are likely, but unintentional. I kept it to Raleigh-only. As far as I can tell, there are no current social club, outside of JL. I didn’t include Lions Club, Kiwanis, Rotary, etc.
Capital Club: One of the oldest is probably the Capital Club. I can’t find much about it, except for this from the National Register of Historic Places. The Capital Club was one of the oldest and most prominent organizations for men in the South. It was located in the Capital Club Building.
Masons: The Grand Lodge of North Carolina was formed on December 12, 1787. Met for the first time in Raleigh in 1794. Their second building is located on Fayetteville Street, with the current lodge on Glenwood Ave. They have experienced a decrease in membership.
Downtown Clubs of Raleigh/City Club Raleigh/Cardinal Club/Capital City Club: Opened in the 1970s. Cardinal Club & Capital City Club were separate organizations. They consolidated in 2009. The club was located on the 28th and 29th floors of the tower at 150 Fayetteville St. Even with over 1,000 members, it closed on December 31, 2024.
North Carolina State University Club: Opened 1958. Private.
The State Club: Closed on December 31, 2020.
Junior League of Raleigh: Started 1927. Currently located on Hillsborough Street.

Brier Creek Country Club: Invited Clubs course
Carolina Country Club: Incorporated on April 15th, 1910. Private.
North Ridge Country Club: First built in 1967. Private.
Raleigh Country Club: Founded in 1948 Private.
Country Club at Wakefield Plantation: Opened in late 1990s. Private.
