Raleigh Stadium/Arena/Sports Discussions

The only way that the Triangle catches Charlotte at the metro level is if the OMB starts consolidating other metros around Raleigh. Right now, the Triangle is more hemmed in by other substantial metros that “fight” for the places in between them. This is true for Fayetteville to our south and the Triad to the west. Maybe the Triangle absorbs Rocky Mount in the future, but that isn’t doing us any growth favors.

Eventually I’m guessing the whole area from Atlanta to Raleigh just becomes one big Metro Glob like Washington to New York / Boston.

Raleigh Durham Greensboro Winston Salem Fayetteville CSA for the win! haha

also with Greensboro as home of the actual athletic organization Atlantic Coast Conference it made sense for the tournament and large venue to be in G’boro.

If the Triangle’s CSA could recapture Harnett and Lee Counties, and steal Alamance from the Triad, the Triangle would have a fighting chance to catch Charlotte, but that would require Charlotte to stop gobbling up periphery counties, and that’s not likely to happen.

We’ve got a fantastic thread on this topic at Raleigh and Statistical Area Population - #698 by HardeesBiscuit, but it’s going to be essentially impossible for Raleigh to catch Charlotte for a couple of reasons. One is that Charlotte is physically a lot bigger than Raleigh. It’s a bit over 300 square miles whereas Raleigh is a bit under 150 square miles. A lot of that comes down to annexation. Without a doubt, Charlotte is experiencing a ton of organic growth, but part of the reason its population has soared in recent decades is that it’s annexed a ton of land during that period (so has Raleigh, but obviously not as much of it).

The other is that Charlotte is currently way, way ahead, and population shifts usually happen very gradually. The 2019 estimate for Charlotte’s population was 885,000, whereas the estimate for Raleigh’s population was 474,000. Even assuming Raleigh’s population keeps growing at an extraordinary clip, it would take maybe 25 years or more for Raleigh to get to where Charlotte is now.

As gets noted a lot in the other thread, if you combine Raleigh and Cary into “twin cities” like Minneapolis-St. Paul, you get a population of 644,000 in an area that is still barely two-thirds the size of Charlotte.

PNC was rocking last night. Still not at the level it was at 2 years ago when we returned to the playoffs, but it’s 75%.

Had a weird situation where my group actually moved back one row to create distance between the folks in front of us since there was no one for another three rows behind us and then some guy who was four seats down from us walks by on the way out and says “hope you enjoyed our seats.” People can be weird as all get out.

But besides that, a blast to be back.

Are there any organized watch parties / block parties for the canes tonight?

There are usually official ones at the Ale Houses, but they have been suspended for the time being.
They used to hold a big party at the one on Glenwood, with representation from the NHL Network in attendance at times.

I’d be happy with MLB regardless of it being half empty or not. I enjoyed getting cheap tickets at the Oakland A’s games. I just want MLB period.

Yes, and they need to make the seats and rows more roomy, that seating experience is not good.

I hope their wrong but they did this same poll in the first round with ALL of them picking the Canes beating the Preds. Besides, I love the Canes being the underdogs.
