Round 2 Playoffs Carolina Loses 1- 2 Tampa Bay we’ll play role-reversal next time.
I’m glad you broke the bad news. I’ll try to post the next game news where we win.
If the PNC Arena replacement was behind the Convention Center. This is what it could look like sans grey blob. Sorry for the bad alignment but the arena model is to scale more or less. Also in real life be taller I didn’t adjust that.
@OakCityDylan View from Dylan’s place below:
Would suck to block the shimmer wall but I’d like the proximity for sure!
I still don’t want to lose Red Hat Amphitheater either. But I guess I should mentally prepare for that anyways.
I was thinking a wrap-around shimmer wall can be incorporated into the exterior of the new arena.
Give it a retractable roof and I’m in.
Please don’t block Lenoir. It is really important for connecting east-west across downtown. If you’re going to block a street, please let it be Cabarrus instead. Cabarrus will close at the RR a half a block west, and is cut off at Salisbury a block east, so almost nothing is lost in terms of connectivity.
I think this would have the be hevly reduced stadium down to a block however it we want MLB Major League Baseball team in Raleigh, we have to widen the stadium for a retractable roof. We might have to add a retractable roof. But I’m not the billionaire but that a nice concept location.
Well that could be suggested if this site is selected. Convention Center leadership might feel threaten by this proposal but they should see this as a plus. There’s still space to expand to whatever space is left on these two blocks. Plus the parking deck to the south can be redeveloped. And potentially the half block north of the convention center is two parking decks, a small building, and a surface lot. Working on an agreement they can expand that way as well. CC may also workout an agreement with the arena to lease the arena for really big conventions. Resolving the issue of the convention center being too small for some conventions.
Not sure the dynamics of the convention center here but in Atlanta GWCC is right next to State Farm arena and they often collaborate. The 2nd biggest convention center in Atlanta by the airport the GICC just actually built their own arena on site too. So I’m willing to bet the convention center would actually welcome an adjacent arena.
They could put the arena floor a couple stories up and use the space below it for meeting rooms/other convention-oriented purposes. You probably couldn’t do an actual expo hall since you’d need structural support for the rest of the arena. Add a hotel connected to it (SW corner Dawson and Cabarrus intersection?) and baby you’ve got a stew going (“Arrested Development” reference FYI)
Here’s what I would do. The arena in general would need somewhat of a creative design. PNC is 700 * 500 and even using this full block and a half we’re at 650*450. Should be able to work though.
Am I missing something, is PNC Arena moving downtown or is this just a hypothetical
They’re all hypotheticals. There’s some chatter about the Canes breaking their lease agreement at the PNC Arena (they could pay a penalty and move out earlier than 2029, if they really wanted to), and the convention center’s supposed to have a second phase of development where it expands beyond the block that they occupy now.
A lot of people on here like to dream about putting two and two together, and having a downtown sports stadium of some sort. …but aside for what Francisco posted below, there’s no formal plans or commitments for anything like this.
PNC Arena debates renovations or moving to Downtown Raleigh
Canes once again swallow an L in Raleigh in Game 2 and Round 2 in the playoffs. Canes lose it 1 - 2 Tampa Bay Lighting
If it hadn’t been for the scrappy play in the last minute, it would be 0-2. Not a great showing at home. Let’s just hope we get another home game and not swept away.
Canes get the must win in OT!
Canes fall in the 2nd round in 5 games.
Who’s taking me to my first ever hockey game next year?!
