Raleigh Stadium/Arena/Sports Discussions

Let’s just say I have sources WRAL & ABC11 do not have.

The handouts being requested are beyond what is normal political greasing palms and the individuals requesting kickbacks are for people who bring zero value to DTS….actually it more people who could hurt the project.

The fact that Raleigh doesn’t sound prestigious enough to the WWE fanbase doesn’t worry me at all.

The salad days of RAW in the mid 90s had such stops as Poughkeepsie and Lowell, MA. And though I loathe the WWE, they respected those places more than Raleigh.

I grew up near and for a time lived in Poughkeepsie and have family near Lowell.

Poughkeepsie and Lowell are no Raleigh.

I get what you’re saying, but I really couldn’t care less what the WWE thinks of Raleigh.

Hope your info is correct DN. My sources are pretty close to the sun and certainly do not sound that optimistic.

I hope so Too UncleJesse ! I hope so Too UncleJesse !

Saw this somewhere else a couple days ago and thought I’d throw this one out here for all the 919 MLB folks. Tampa Bay is going to put up a visible Tampa Bay-Montreal graphic in the outfield during the playoffs. Looks like they’re still discussing any potential home sharing arrangement between TB/MTL locally down there in Tampa/St. Pete. Reading the article shows they still have their lease with that god awful stadium through 2027.

The WRAL story on DTS says that the Malik group closed the deal on the land, the land has been rezoned as needed, and initial work is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2021, so, I dunno, I guess time is going to tell on that one, but it seems like everything is coming along okay.

I know there are people hiding behind the anonymity of an avatar who claim, without evidence, that they have some sort of inside information and are claiming, also without any evidence, that members of the city council are going around committing crimes related to this project, but it’s bad to run around falsely accusing people of committing crimes, guys.

Does Raleigh and the region have the balls to take a swing at pitching the Atlantic Coast Conference to bring its HQ to the de facto HQ of the ACC!!!

This would be an interesting play. We fit the criteria the conference listed in their press release yesterday. But I have a sneaking suspicion it’s been Charlotte all along. If they really want to salt the path behind them, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to hear they’re moving to NYC, either.

In case anyone didn’t see what is being discussed, the ACC officially said it would consider sites outside Greensboro for its headquarters.

IMO, Raleigh should absolutely put together a proposal and chase the project, but to me it seems like Charlotte is the lead horse, and is honestly the best fit. Atlanta would also be a decent choice, as well as an open challenge to the SEC. I think our airport is a bit small, plus having the three ACC schools in the Triangle could be viewed as a positive or a negative.

Here are the stated criteria:

Located within the Eastern time zone
Population size with positive growth trends
Growth and diversity of population
Access to a large hub airport with effective accessibility to and from all ACC member schools
Anticipated benefit to the overall ACC brand and potential synergies to existing and perspective partners
Financial considerations related to operational expenses

Yeah, I think this is one of those ridiculous “searches” that’s just a dog and pony show for a decision that’s already been made. The crazy thing is how these orgs always pay a search firm gobs of money to tell them what they want to hear. (Although I guess it helps deflect peoples’ hurt feelings to a neutral third party—it was their recommendation)!!

Search firm spends five minutes looking at population charts and direct flight options

“Charlotte.” That’ll be $250k please and thank you.

Yeah Charlotte has been poaching things from the Triad for years. The ACC headquarters will be just another example.

ESPN picked it up too. I agree, on almost every single bullet point you outlined that the ACC is ‘looking for’ in their next HQ city Raleigh would qualify. I sincerely sincerely hope the city of Raleigh will make a play at this. We are building plenty of buildings downtown with potential office space that could house them. I hope this isn’t a smoke screen/PR announcement just to say it’s going to Charlotte.

Time will tell I suppose…

Another article, this one is from TBJ and has slightly more background. It lists potential candidates as Charlotte, Raleigh, Atlanta, New York, Boston and Washington.

My thoughts on best choices:

  1. Charlotte
  2. Atlanta
  3. Raleigh
  4. Greensboro
  5. DC

IMO, anything north of DC or south of Atlanta makes no sense whatsoever.

Pretty obvious they already selected Charlotte for this. I mean look at all the ACC events being hosted there atm. Just like Amazon already chose their HQ2 picks before the competition started.

But the overwhelming reality is that Charlotte doesn’t have ANY ACC schools, whereas the Triangle has THREE.

Except the airport hub part.
