True, and that probably hurts our chances. A neutral site, like Greensboro, appears more attractive.
It would be awesome to get them in Raleigh, and also build a ACC sports museum.
I know money talks in all of this but the sentimental side of my heart would love the ACC to come to itâs rightful spiritual home to Tobacco Road. College basketball is the ACCâs bread & butter and would only seem right.
@Francisco I know they do tend to host a lot of things down there for sure. I feel like the ACC soccer conference tourneys are consistently hosted up here at WakeMed soccer park (if we want to claim that). Correct me if Iâm wrong, but I think some of the ACC network is also located in Charlotte too? Iâm sure that might also help their chances too.
Weâre not a huge hub but Iâm pretty sure we have direct flights to all ACC cities and most major US cities
Iâm gonna be the nerd who does this (basing it off RDUâs Nonstop Destinations page).
- Boston College: BOS via American, Delta, JetBlue
- Clemson: drivable
- Duke: local
- Florida State: no direct flights to TLH
- Georgia Tech: ATL via Delta, Frontier, Southwest
- Louisville: no direct flights to SDF
- Miami: MIA via American, Delta
- NC State: local
- North Carolina: local
- Notre Dame: no direct flights to SBN
- Pittsburgh: PIT via American
- Syracuse: no direct flights to SYR
- Virginia: drivable
- Virginia Tech: drivable
- Wake Forest: drivable
Looks like we run into problems with four out of fifteen (maybe five if you consider Clemson to be too far of a drive). There were more nonstops in the pre-COVID era, but Iâm not sure where that list is. Worth noting that Charlotte does have direct flights to all four via American, plus Charlottesville, Roanoke/Blacksburg, and, if youâre feeling ridiculously lazy, Greenville and Raleigh.
Didnât think / know some of those cities even had airports that have real commercial flights lol
They shouldnât, frankly. If we lived in a country with a modern rail system, airports like Piedmont Triad or Greenville-Spartanburg wouldnât need to exist. Youâd fly to Charlotte and your connecting âflightâ would be a 30-45min train ride straight into downtown. Lufthansa does this.
Ah well.
So, the Kansas City NWSL team has announced plans for a purpose-built stadium in a nice location in Kansas City. The news is all about how this will be the first NWSL-specific stadium. (The owners are also doing it with private money instead of demanding tax dollars, which is nice.) Alas we couldnât get our shit together in time to settle on a purpose-built stadium in DT South, but does the KC announcement maybe push the Courage a little bit on the matter here? I hope?
Put it in Wake Forest at the seminary just for laughs. Better yet, on Franklin Street just to see some Wolfpack fansâ heads explode.
Yâall have it mixed up. The ACC is most definitely coming to Raleighâwe even have a street named for them!
They canât turn us down now!
If it comes hopefully itâs a downtown tower and not out in Brier Creek! haha
Maybe this is the holy whale tenant the Zimmer folks have been looking for in their new tower??? That building would offer fantastic signage opportunities IMO. I would really like to speak this one into existenceâŚ
Saw this on twitter for a Tampa/St. Pete baseball / soccer concept. Iâve always thought a shared stadium for those 2 sports is a non-starter - but this is actually intriguing. Check the thread for more renderings. FYI, scaled the stadium for overall size and dimensions 675âx475â fits perfectly at Cargill site.
I would love to see this also ! High Point /Gastonia minor league baseball has already done this . Mr. Malik likes better soccer / football combination , at least 6 months ago he told me this .
They donât even have a real university periodâŚâŚUNC-Southwest is a commuter college
I think that thereâs likely a desire to keep the conference HQ out of a member city. Greensboro wasnât a member school city, and Charlotte isnât either.
Letâs put it in Cary, Apex, or Holly Springs then
Why not HubRTP? Right square in the middle.
Not the worst idea in the world being real close to the airport and all.
There is no way on Godâs green earth that the conference would put its HQ in the very center of 3 of its founding member schools. No way that happens.
Jim Boeheimâs head would explode at that announcement. Heâd probably rupture a major blood vessel at just the idea.
