Raleigh Stadium/Arena/Sports Discussions

I mean I was born a Bills fan, and will always say GO BILLS first and foremost, but I live here now why not root for my home team too? But yeah TONS of attention on Carolina right now, and you can bet your ass the crowd at BOA when he starts in a few weeks is going to be INSANE.

As a diehard Panthers fan I’m happy we’re going to try something different than Darnold at QB, but still have questions/concerns over the QB position. We only got Cam, to my knowledge, signed for the rest of this season + already picked up Darnold’s contract for next season. So we still have nothing settled at QB either way? Also, we don’t even know what type of Cam Newton we’re going to get? Didn’t look all too impressive in NE but I hope I’m wrong…

Same, Cam is full of himself. How long until his wardrobe becomes more important than his performance on the field.

I’m sorry, but Cam put Carolinas on the map? What in the world? Not even just looking at sports. Arguably the biggest athlete superstar of the 20th century rocked Carolina blue, and even owned a pro team in Charlotte while Cam still lived in Alabama.

Did I say the Carolinas? I said Charlotte/Carolina. As in the Carolina Panthers LMAO. Some of y’all should go eat your morning cereal before coming on here with the attitude :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

You did say ā€œCharlotte/ the Carolinasā€ If you simply meant Panthers, I don’t know why you didn’t say that.

Edit: Upon rereading, you used the initial wording first, and then ā€œCharlotte/ Carolinaā€ second. So it was confusing if you meant them to mean completely separate things.

He certainly was a superstar. I think at this point the sports world at large is happy he’s with fans who like him and just hopes he retires before his whole brain turns into oatmeal. Dude’s taken some beatings.

Anti Charlotte everything. Sports, city, will not even stop for gas there.

Went to Canes game last night. Had fun, but $20 for parking with a long cold walk through gravel parking lot not ideal. Probably only a once or twice a year thing for me. As a downtown resident I would absolutely love a downtown stadium. The suburban guy would probably say the opposite.

Between the immediate rush to leave the stadium area because there’s nothing to do, the ripoff parking prices, the total lack of public transit, and the hellacious rideshare waits, it’s one of the worst pro sports access/egress situations in the country.

For a small-market NHL team that situation is hard to fathom.

With you except the parking prices. For stadiums in other cities I’ve seen upwards of $50-70+ even when they have transit access.

But they need to figure out what they’re going to do. If they’re going to move downtown in 2029, fine. If not they really need to invest in that area mixed use wise because it’s unacceptable for as great of a city and metro we are for our main stadium to be in a parking wasteland.

I wonder why people keep saying this. Is it because he dresses flashy? I’ve never heard Cam say he’s the best. He always gives credit to his team and he always take responsibility when he messes up :man_shrugging:t4: He’s also one of the most genuine when it comes to charity for inner city kids.

I feel like most of Cam’s critics think he has a big ego for one of two reasons:

  1. They confuse confidence with arrogance. Both can exist simultaneously, but are not necessarily indicative of each other. Oftentimes, you can only distinguish between the two if you know that individual personally.

  2. His cultural tastes and preferences are not akin to theirs. It’s easy to assume that someone who stands out from the crowd is doing so to draw attention to themselves, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes the goal is, instead, to draw attention to a culture or trend. Other times, it simply boils down to ā€œI wear big hats because I like big hats.ā€

I’m going to draw a weird parallel here. Remember when Lady Gaga started getting big and wore a bunch of crazy dresses and other outfits? I remember there being lots of criticism about the points she was trying to make with her wardrobe, but (correct me if I’m wrong) I really don’t remember anyone calling her arrogant for those things. Most people kind of just shrugged it off like ā€œhaha weird, whatever, it’s Lady Gaga,ā€ and, ultimately, we all sort of accepted it and moved on once we got past the initial shock factor. So what makes Cam any different? If he walks into a press conference with another big hat, why can’t we just say ā€œhaha weird, whatever, it’s Cam Newtonā€?

I guess what I’m getting at is this: if he’s not breaking any rules and other players who know him personally aren’t speaking poorly of him, why does everyone care so much? I think the dude just likes to have fun, which is, like, the point of sports.

Sidenote: not a Panthers fan, never will be, don’t try to convince me otherwise lol.

I agree with this. I’m a Jets fan, so I have no dog in the fight, but I have a lot of friends who are Panthers fans and a majority don’t like Newton. I think it’s a combination of the points you’ve made, plus the fact that he’s maybe the most physically gifted QB out there (or at least was) and wasn’t able to also become the QB with the most Super Bowl titles (or even get one.)

I personally have always liked Cam and obviously, I’d take him on the Jets any day lol.

Cam caused a mini-scandal at his first Pro Bowl, where apparently some players took issue with his antics throughout the week. There is an consistency of some background noise stories involving Cam going back at least to Auburn. Whether they were amplified for nefarious reasons I do not know. But he has been a polarizing figure both on and off the field his entire career.
