He most certainly is a polarizing figure. My family are all from NC and are Panthers fans (through and through) and my dad just couldn’t ever root for Cam as hard as some fans. I guess he would be considered ‘old-school’ and played football back in the day and was from the ‘hand the ball to ref and keep it moving’ camp after each play. He never cared for all the dancing, Superman S on my chest, antics, etc. There’s definitely going to be a portion of the fanbase that probably won’t ever forgive him on that lack of a dive towards the fumble in Super Bowl 50 IMO too as well.
Has the general public every liked any flashy type Black NFL QB. Sorry to bring that into it but let’s stop dancing around it and call it for how it is…
Russell Wilson? Donovan McNabb? Kyler Murray? Patrick Mahomes? I put question marks bc I don’t know if the general public likes these QBs. Aaron Rodgers gets disliked for the same reasons.
Edit: Missed the “flashy” portion of your comment. Some of these QBs might not be the flashiest.
I disagree with this and have my own list of QBs that happen to be black that I like, but I guess I probably am not “the general public” either. My dislike of Cam is simply because he is (was) good and played (now plays again) for a competing team in my team’s division (Bucs/NFC South). I also disliked Tom Brady for most of his career.
Kordell was a fan favorite before he was ever the starting qb, and it’s arguable he became the starting qb when he did in part because he was so loved. He was also arguably the template for Vince Young as far as qb molds go, someone who was also flashy and beloved (at least after the title game) until he stopped producing.
I also don’t know how “flashy” Randall Cunningham was considered as that was mostly before my time, though I have some suspicions he might fit.
Though obviously that isn’t always the case, and certainly someone like McNabb got unduly scrutinized.
I would just like to point out to all the haters in this thread for OUR QB (Carolina Panthers = ALL OF THE CAROLINAS’ NFL TEAM BABY!) that Cam had 2 snaps… and 2 TDs yesterday - and the Panthers put the most points on the board in the first half of a game since 2015
Your definition of “our” makes a lot of assumptions
I think you are being, oh forget about it.
Thank you ! For pointing it out !
Nothing in Charlotte is Raleigh’s. Rather go north to DC to catch other pro teams.
Sincere question here. Do you think that folks in Charlotte consider the Canes “their” team as well with their home in Raleigh?
That and is there also a generational aspect to one’s acceptance or dislike of the “flashiness” in general?
At a high level I agree with you, but again I think Cam Newton is that special case that divides opinion. For example, in my own personal experience I have black friends who root for the Panthers and they do/did not care for his antics? I know from my personal experience watching with my neighbor, who’s the same skin color as Cam Newton, does not speak as representative of the whole but I wanted to touch on that element you brought up.
I think honestly a lot of it also came down to if we were winning or not. In some of those lean years with Cam at QB, and the game is lost/out of hand, him dancing after a first down rubbed people the wrong way. However in 2015 (MVP/Super Bowl season) the narrative was ‘look at the joy he plays with’ so
Charlotte could care less about the hurricanes, especially now since the farm team is now in Chicago.
Speaking of the Hurricanes, fivethirtyeight currently has them as the favourite to win the Stanley Cup:
Another article about the possible ACC Headquarters move. Greensboro leaders submitted their pitch yesterday. Details of the pitch were not made public.
Raleigh is mentioned along with Charlotte and Atlanta as the most likely rivals to Greensboro.
https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2021/11/18/greensboro-submits-acc-proposal.html
Atlanta would be weird. An SEC town by any measure.
The non-triangle schools would be in outright revolt if it was Raleigh. It was always going to be Charlotte. This reminds me of the Amazon sweepstakes that was always going to land in DC
And they haven’t all this time it’s been in Greensboro with Wake down the road in Winston-Salem? Would they be that offended or is this chest beating like how BC/VT/Clemson kept UConn out?
No offense to Wake but being 35 mins from Wake is different than being next door to Duke/UNC/State. Whether it’s fair or not the perception is that the ACC has its thumb on the scale for those schools (and of course mostly just NC and Duke).
Again, this is all wasted energy. It’s going to be Charlotte.
