Soccer to over take baseball?

I haven’t watched it all, but listening to “soccer is the most popular sport and America is the largest sports economy” reminded me of Mad Men and the time they tried to make jai alai the national pastime.

This case was Boeheim being Boeheim. He’s the northeastern parallel to Coach K straight down to bowing out after this season. His ego has been there since the heyday of the original Big East.

Given the quality of their programs, I wonder why. If Rutgers passed muster with the B1G, why not Cuse especially since it would cut the ACC out of the New York market.

Cuse is only what it is because it is the surrogate Big University for a state that has historically deprioritized public higher education. Remember, the assorted grants in New York don’t lie with a SUNY but are with Cornell and athletically Cuse filled the hole a major state university or several filled elsewhere. Even the four SUNY University Schools (the ones who are D1) are “young” in their current forms: Buffalo and Binghamton were converted from private schools, Albany was a teacher’s college, and Stony Brook was built as such.

Even if SUNY did give them the attention ECU/ASU/UNCC/UNCG/UNCW have gotten, there are downsides. Buffalo is the easternmost outlier in a midwestern conference, Stony Brook is a geographic extreme, Binghamton has no football (though that hasn’t hurt UNCW) and Albany has been the historical chewtoy of the SUNY system being in the state capital. It really is a different world.

The B10 forced out Delany and the rumor was partly anger at the Rutgers addition. They were picked when cable subscriptions mattered. But the landscape has changed, and Rutgers is beginning to look like an albatross around the conference’s neck.

But in a more general sense, the B10 school profile is large research-oriented state schools. Northwestern is the outlier, but is a founding member from the 19th century and is a research powerhouse.

So the second most boring sport is taking over the most boring sport. Amazing :joy:

SoccerStadiumDigest has a article today stating that San Diego has plans to build a 20,000 seat soccer stadium .

wow. so i didn’t really think it could get worse and yet…

has there every been a start of a franchise that has been less inspired? from the placeholder looking logo, borrowed stadium, absurd ticket prices, cringe marketing, and now jerseys that look like someone googled 'blue and gray warmup soccer jersey".

charlotte should be embarrassed.

I give their whole branding package a 1.5/10 it’s awful. I swear their design team hired off Fiverr

Raleigh deserved a team so much more, just due to the sole fact our branding would have been so much better.

Get a load of their warm up jerseys. I don’t know if this is a one-time thing for some cancer cause, or what they’re wearing before every game.

Yes! I just got my email from Charlotte FC yesterday:

The wait is over…

For the Carolinas. For the Crown.

It’s finally here - the first-ever kit in club history!

Minted in blue & uniting the Carolinas, the primary kit will be worn with pride by players and fans of all backgrounds coming together for one purpose.

I think the new kit looks awesome, personally. I love that shade of blue. :blue_heart: I’m putting in an order now!
