It’s even worse than this in terns of TV markets. An MLB team in Raleigh would surely turn on some TVs in the Triad and the eastern part of the state. So you’d get a decent number of viewers who aren’t in the official Raleigh Durham TV market.[/quote]
And the fun thing is that those eyeballs currently aren’t watching because nothing is available for most people. The Orioles and Nationals claim NC outside of the far western portions carriage of MASN is so poor in NC that you wouldn’t know it unless you had DirecTV or one of the few providers (Xfinity or the pmCharter Spectrum systems in the Outer Banks) that do carry MASN. This doesn’t get into MASN’s total ignorance of OTT means, their production image being unchanged since 2009, or that the O’s/Nats have spotty radio coverage in NC.
The A’s probably would also get Utah as well but the LA teams/Diamondbacks mean they won’t get an inch of California or Arizona. Maybe, maybe parts of Wyoming and southern Idaho. The Golden Knights footprint is massive - all of NV/UT/MT/WY plus eastern Idaho - the eyeballs just aren’t there.
Also, adding too many teams to a market in quick succession never works well. Atlanta and Miami are exhibits A and B, and those markets actually had people in them though the latter’s rapid rise was fueled by MLB/NHL wanting Wayne Huizenga’s sweet Waste Management/Blockbuster money.
Having your business model hinge on opposing fans filling the stands is a dangerous game to play especially as it sends a poor message to your actual fans. Not just the easy examples of the Marlins/Rays/NHL Panthers but even cases such as two Nationals Opening Days being filled with Phillies fans.
Heck, the NHL’s alignment is wonky as it is thanks to the Panthers knowing that the ticket prices in Montreal/Toronto/Boston are so high that it’s cheaper to fly to Fort Lauderdale and get a hotel room and nice seats there. Even the scheduling of Habs/Panthers is usually the same time each year - Holiday Break and Spring Break for Quebec schools/CEGEP - because they know they can market.
I’m not sure where else to ask this and perhaps it spawns into a larger conversation. We’re going to the Cane‘s game on Sunday afternoon and I can’t seem to find public transportation options to get to the arena, outside of typical rideshare and the Caniac bus doesn’t run anymore. There is bus service via 26 to PNC but the doesn’t service downtown. What am I missing?
The Cary Town Council approved a $13 million expansion of the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Thursday night that backers say will give the town one of the world’s best baseball training centers.
If you don’t mind a long ride, take either the 4 or the 6 and transfer to the 26. Otherwise… drive to Wade Park early to snag street parking, then get a drink at Bru’s ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Hearing from fairly credible sources that a DTS stadium announcement is coming at some point soon-ish. May be called and “entertainment & sports venue” initially but will have the ability to expand as needed (ie: MLS franchise).
I do boy know what “soon-ish” means exactly but my source has fairly strong ties to the powers that be.
So let’s say Spring for now.
We can call it “RESA 2.0” …….for those that remember PNC when it was built.
Piggybacking on this, I saw the Cary blog ran a story on it too. They go into detail and link some stuff from previous meetings and touch on the solar panel. They are quoted as saying they expect to start spring 2022 and be done by 2024.
Thinking of other possible downtown arena sites… the Federal building at New Bern & Person… that block has the exact same dimensions as the Bridgestone Arena block in Nashville. Somehow get the State and Fed Govts to team up on a office building and parking deck project on the NC Bar block so the Fed offices (and parking) can be relocated.
1 block to the GoRaleigh Bus Hub where all BRTs converge(?). Breathe new life into Fayetteville St / City Market entertainment areas.
I have thought that the Federal Government block(s) were a total waste of valuable real estate. I love the idea of a potential hockey arena replacement on this block right by Moore Square/City Market, and 2 blocks from Fayetteville street. Plus there are already several big parking decks within this area, so the need for additional (off peak) parking should be minimal.
Agreed, this would be a great spot for the arena. However, the 10mil pound elephant is moving the Federal building. It contains a lot of functions, and since the OKC bombing, the requirements for new Fed Bldgs are intense. I can’t even imagine where the Fed’s could find a place to replicate this building, or where they could put split up functions!
Yeah even if the GSA agreed to move, got a sweetheart deal on substitute space, and the City/State/whoever lined up the deal for a stadium, it would very literally require an act of Congress.
Greenville SC’s new federal courthouse opened late this year after starting site selection in 2008 and acquiring the site in 2011. Mind you, that was an additional facility, the prior courthouse is still in operation and the courts didn’t have to deal with the additional headache of offloading the old space
A nice thought but you’d have better chances just playing the lottery
We are getting a new Fed Crthouse in Anniston, my county seat. They city swapped their city hall and the entire block, and will get the old turn-of-the-19th-century Fed Crth for the new city hall.
It is nearly done, but it did take about 10 yrs to come to fruition. The building is large, but most of the block is “buffer” from the streets.
