Raleigh Stadium/Arena/Sports Discussions

Raleigh has:

Jim Goodnight
John Sall
Tim Sweeney
Tim Sweeny’s #2 (forget his name)
Temple Sloan (sold CarQuest to Advance Auto for $2+B)

(Steve Malik = est.$250MM - $400MM)

charlotte usa has ZERO billionaires who call the area home…ZERO!!!

So Raleigh has “AT LEAST” 5 known Raleighites with a ‘$B’ next to their net worth…and NONE have any interest in helping Raleigh with our sports dreams.

You know, there’s worse things than being known for college sports, hockey, and as a great place to live and do business.

Not sticking up for Charlotte here but I don’t think that’s entirely accurate. I know Tepper for tax purposes ‘lives’ in Florida so he’s not considered a NC resident. However assuming MJ’s primary residence is now Charlotte, he’s worth over a billion dollars per Forbes.

That why combing the Raleigh-Cary MSA with Durham-Chapel Hill MSA is crucial for us to be even considered for another team.

More info about proposed renovations and development at PNC.

They want $225 million in renovations with work starting in the summer of 2023. Also some discussion about the entertainment district

225 should be a good amount to get a whole new feel inside. State Farm arena was 180 mil a few years ago and they completely gutted the building.

That looks like some major external work. But I guess most buildings the outside is just curtain wall. Time to change the drapes!
It would be great to see some sort of transportation - street car/brt, anything- that runs thru this area, up to Rex and on to Crabtree. As they redesign this area, it would be the time to build in something dedicated. As a kid, this always seemed a natural branch of the rail we would have running by this date. Yet here we are . . .

Looks like WRAL has a copy of the presentation online for everyone to view. Kinda hard to assume how the discussion was going when their slides were mostly pictures (and no words) but it’s better than nothing. It was in the article from their website.

As another data point, the Legacy Arena in Birmingham was completely redone (I wish there were comparison pictures in this article) for $125m and finished six months ago. It was almost a full gut on the inside.

After looking at this presentation, its not just a change in skin, but expansions out!!

@Daniel - good call on the comparison. Gutted right down to the concrete, and added on too. This area, with its 2 hotels, a block of restaurants, Top Golf and the new football stadium is an dang interesting comparison to what they want to do out at PNC/ C-F. It is different because it is so close to downtown - like just on the other side of the freeway from DTB. It should get a lot of play with the World Games starting in just a few days now. The pic is of Sloss Furnace, not the new ESD.

Isn’t Jim Goodmon of Capital Broadcasting/WRAL and Durham Bulls fame close to or just over the $1B mark? I know he has interest in sports between the Bulls and the minority share he had in the Canes but he’s getting on in years which could be a downside.

Sure but these things take a while and you’d have days between Jets & Giants game, where you may have less than 4 hours between NCSU & Canes games. The team stores are changed over, but they want to be able to have merch for both teams at the same time as there is a lack of locations where you can get NCSU & Canes gear. And for NCSU games, why would you want to get rid of the Canes branding? It’s the only way we’ll see a championship banner this century in those rafters for a basketball game

Jordan has homes in Charlotte (on Lake Norman and uptown). But he lives primarily with his wife and twin girls in Florida.

Jordan “lives” in Florida.

He also has homes in Chapel Hill but that doesn’t make him a resident.

Ahh I was under the assumption, based on something I read somewhere, that he lived full time here in NC. I guess he’s just like the other super rich ‘living’ in Florida too.

It has ended well, I think y’all are forgetting Jerry Reece interest in bringing MLB here.

Tepper in Jersey.

Not looking at those cities those are just locations with interest. Here in Raleigh the only person is Jerry Reece.

Jerry Reese is a Real Estate Attorney. Although, I think SAS was interested in helping bring MLS to the city but they couldn’t trust Malik. Maybe since they’re run by old farts, these old farts may like baseball

Jerry Reese hasn’t announced what details how he wants to put MLB here to Raleigh, SAS apparently they weren’t but, maybe Steve Malik obviously they were good not to trust him since his downtown south fiasco is playing out.

There are other billionaires in Raleigh.

FWIW Rob Manfred, the MLB commissioner, gave an interview to ESPN recently and he reaffirmed his desire to expand to 32 teams.
