Raleigh Stadium/Arena/Sports Discussions

I’m not really saying Raleigh couldn’t put people in those seats. But moreso there are better uses of space in a city taking the next steps to populate and activate a budding downtown.

You’re right, because you’re always right, right?
I’m ‘triggered’ by the lunacy of circular postings about the same things you’ll never change. Carry on…

I think that those in the Triangle who compare us to similar sized markets seem to conveniently forget that the Triangle is supporting 140,000 power 5 football seats and 50,000 men’s basketball and 20,000 women’s basketball seats. Yes, I know that those seats have a draw from around the state, but pro sports have a similar pattern of folks who will travel to see games. Also, I’d bet that a huge number of season tix holders for ACC sports come from the Triangle population.

And how many of those seats are filled by casuals with no ties to the university hosting them? And what effect would that have on teams playing when universities aren’t in session?

I know a lot of people who go to games who have no affiliation with NC State.

And how established are those people in this area? And would that spending towards NC State evaporate if MLB and/or MLS showed up?

Sports that take place largely in that fallow May-August period should have no effect on the universities whatsoever. That and such a team agnostic towards the universities and the rivalries within will only build regional cohesion.

I think that there are folks who are just fans of particular sports and enjoy a good experience. Big time college football is nothing if not experiences. Notably, I think that the full day aspect of it with tailgating on a nice autumn day is something that’s just really enjoyable.

What does this have to do with the Triangle getting MLB and/or MLS? Do you think that the crowd that would enjoy both take away from fall tailgating? Will CFC have any effect on keeping people from wanting to travel to USC/Clemson/Wake Forest/State/Chapel Hill or even at UNC Charlotte?

I am describing why folks who are not affiliated with NC State would choose to go to games. It was asked of me.

There’s still quite a few that are non students. I mean, only around 30% of the stadium is actually dedicated to student sections. Many students sit in regular seats as well, but 70% of the stadium needing to be filled by people who didn’t get student section tickets (which are relatively cheaper) show that people will spend to go, and that there’s likely quite a few who aren’t students. And you also have to know that many of these college students will probably want to go to NFL, MLB, MLS games too. Go watch the Bulls, the Canes, NCFC, The Courage. A lot of those games and events have a large number of college students at them. And, Raleigh is the sports city on the eastern half of NC and southern parts of VA. I know of somebody who is from (and still lives in) Norfolk who drives down for every Hurricanes home game despite not even attending college in NC. And for the MLB, we have the market the MLB should want. Go to a bulls game and there’s everybody represented, including quite a few young people, which encourages growth in the game. I remember in high school, I would go to a Bulls game, and without fail, I’d see at least 5 people I knew from school. I don’t go as much now (since I have work and a busier personal life) but I still find a lot of people I know at these games, and these people who grew up with the bulls and are developing a family of their own now have their children in on the game. Tickets for the bulls game last night were just about $50 per seat for the outfield seats. Despite more expensive costs, they still sold 10,757 tickets on a day where people would likely otherwise be with their family having a barbecue and then going out to watch the fireworks. Not watch the entire baseball game too.

I am not hostile to more options. I am only laying out the context of our sport market that makes the Triangle different to other 2M markets. You don’t have to convince me of anythng.

Not my thing to watch, but the stage set-up for the Apex Legends event at PNC is pretty awesome.

Is this thing free to the public or is there a cost to attend? I’m just curious…but not curious enough to spend money watching kids play video games…

Looks like single-day tickets are $15

I think owns a share in the Miami Marlins.

most billionaires that invest in sports teams do it for their own egos.

And certain constituencies are always happy to spend other peoples money they didn’t earn. Don’t both, become a billionaire and buy your own team.

I see now why @dtraleigh put a slowdown the ‘Raleigh stadium / sports’ thread. But that convo just moved over into this thread now.

Nice. Between you and @GucciLittlePig, should have moved this over sooner.
