Reading about the new TGL tech and partnership with PGA. This might be an excellent opportunity for Raleigh (downtown south). With Pinehurst so close and Raleigh working to become an e-sports hub, this should be on the radar.
Not the biggest golf guy in the world but saw last night during football that Charlotte is getting ready to host the Presidents Cup for golf this upcoming week. Traditionally Greensboro regularly hosts the Wyndham which brings in the big shots from the PGA like Tiger in the past.
Has Raleigh ever wondered about taking a swing (big time pun) at hosting any of these high level/high profile PGA events? Or with the proximity of Pinehurst being within an hour’s or so drive away kind of hampered those ambitions?
Raleigh has not had a course that would meet PGA requirements…until recently when McConnell revamped Raleigh Country Club. He is moving the Korn Ferry (think minor league golf) event form his Wakefield course to RCC next year. Rumor is he has grand visions of hosting a PGA event there one day in the future…whether it happens…TBD.
Well that’s good to hear they’re at least thinking about it. Charlotte is going to get a worldwide televised PR victory lap hosting this thing. I know we’ve mentioned it on other threads but I still think Raleigh has a branding issue and hosting an event like this, or if they get the College Olympic Games, would help Raleigh in that regards.
Maybe the best thing to do is just fold Pinehurst and Southern Pines into the Raleigh MSA. Then we would have multiple very prestigious golf courses and events.
Yeah because racist people didn’t like NBCs stance on Civil Rights so NC 2 major NBC affiliates were stuck on UHF bands which are hard to get. At least that Wilmington is recieved there. But Moore County is covered well here.
Definitely no surprise. ACC leadership wanted to move to Charlotte and did a dog and pony show to justify the change. It is kind of too bad because of the history, but it makes sense. Charlotte is a bigger, more accessible market. I’m glad it stayed in the state.
The ACC is very likely to be less important in coming years as the SEC and Big Ten continue to become more dominant.
ACC won’t exist in 5 years so it won’t matter. The $15MM in taxpayer handout will have been put to great use…to fuel the ego of the most insecure city in america.
I’ll politely agree to disagree on the more accessible point, as yes Charlotte Douglas is bigger and more passenger traffic headcount, but RDU ain’t no slouch. I think someone earlier in this thread pointed out how almost every ACC school has almost a direct flight into RDU. I’m sure some of the other schools would have complained if they put the HQ in this area but this area is the heart/birthplace/cradle/pick a word of the ACC. From a tradition perspective Charlotte doesn’t have a leg to stand on here, but I’m in agreement at least it’s staying in the state.
You and @UncleJesse are right, the ACC is going to have serious trouble trying to keep their schools in lock step. From this 2021 article, ACC schools are splitting $240 million from ESPN equally 14 ways for $17 million each. The brand new mammoth Big 10 deal splits $1 billion 16 ways for about $62.5 million each. I know the ACC schools are sort of locked in to the 2030s, but I think some schools would pay whatever penalty it takes to get that kind of payout annually.
