But in all seriousness, itāll have to be built to survive like any other standalone development. Iām thinking Fenton or the original North Hills redevelopment, but with less retail and more restaurants.
A really good video interview on twitter with Johnny Chappell and Mayor Baldwin on downtown Raleigh. It is a 25 minute video & Mayor Baldwin does mention the soccer stadium at the very end of this video!
That they did, great win, great crowd! Itās a fun time to be a Canes fan, theyāre legit contenders.
Also would like to point out that the Canes now have over 14,000 season ticket holders. Just around 5 years ago there was only around 6,000 season ticket holders I believe. The Canes fanbase is thriving. Hope this PNC redevelopment goes through and we can continue building on the success of the team & fanbase.
Itās exciting and refreshing to see the Canes surging in popularity and have a strategy thatās putting a winning team out on the ice consistently for the past 3-4 seasons. Itās a stark contrast to the seemingly malaise, rudderless, and overall meh direction the Panthers seem to be going in under the current ownership. Think I saw there were rumors they were potentially looking to shop McCaffrey around tooā¦
WRAL had a writeup on the total headcount at the Canes game too. I felt watching the Panthers game there were very evident empty sections and more 49ers red than Panthers colors in the stands.
Dundon >>>>>>>>>>> Tepper in terms of strategy, money management, BASIC COMMON SENSE. The two NC pro-sports franchise owners could NOT be more opposite, and we luckily have the better/less DUMB one.
I get what youāre saying butā¦the Charlotte Hornets say hi
Not that theyāve been that much better historicallyā¦
@JKK He sure knows how to pick some stocks but is absolutely terrible at picking a functioning NFL quarterback, a coach who knows what heās doing, or how to build a practice facility to say a few things off the top of my head
Oh WOW, how did I forget the Hornets??? And yes to your points, @JKK terrible money management specifically for a major sports franchise, specifically. For instance: the statistically terrible Head Coach he just FIRED? Yeah, the Panthers org. still owes him over $40million. After being fired. Matt Rhule contract buyout: Panthers owe coach more than $40 million.
Tepper writes the checks but Scott Fitterer is drafting and putting together the compensation packages for the players. I get the hate on Tepper though, he did originally push for Matt Rhule.
For the record Iām not a Panthers fan. Instead Iāve watched the Chicago Bears fumble around trying to find QBs and everyone else over the last decade. I feel your pain.
And no pain for me, it was truly magical watching the 2015 PEAK Cam Newton season, but luckily my team-by-birth the Buffalo Bills are playing better than they were 30 years ago!
There is a long history of very smart businessmen who became rich, bought a sports franchise and then act like 10-year-old fans instead of using those business smarts to develop and drive a sustainably winning organization. Youād think that āhire the best people and then let them do their jobsā wouldnāt be that hard to do, but it sure seems to elude so many of these guys.
Just wanna say Iām so thankful our only major sports franchise here has an owner with a seemingly good head on his shoulders, whoās made good decisions and built a genuinely good team. Charlotte on the other handā¦ WHEW boy, they can keep Tepper till he inevitably tanks and sells everything and leaves town. What a disgrace!
Most Sportsball team owners look at their investment like developers look at historic buildings - faster to strip it down to the ground and rebuild than to rehabā¦
Given the draft system, it usually is smarter to strip it down and rebuild than float around the playoff fringes forever, never quite being bad enough or having enough cap space to get the elite talent you need to jump up into real contention.
Of course, that requires having a smart GM and/or owner.
I guess the only carveout to the whole McCaffrey trade is that it clears a lot of money from the cap in the next couple of years + whoever takes over as coach has a bunch of additional picks now. Time will tell if the Panthers got the best couple of years out of McCaffrey early on as he canāt seem to stay healthy.
My only concern is that weāre basically in the same position in 2018 (when Tepper took over) as now in 2022. No coach, no QB, not competing, etc. Hopefully heās learned something by now but I donāt have my hopes up
