Raleigh Stadium/Arena/Sports Discussions

this is extra, but there’s just no way any national team here will be called the caps/capitals. it doesn’t make sense, there are 51+ capital cities in the country, and only one of them is a national capital for a national league.

We used to have the Raleigh IceCaps. Now we can call the baseball team the Raleigh FieldCaps

I will take anything, so long as its not related to oak.

Yeah while there was a team called the Raleigh Capitals, that was in the Carolina and Piedmont Leagues, which was almost entirely teams in North Carolina.

By the way, I just hopped off the LT line from the Caps game. It was pretty good. Aaron Judge did his thing as usual. I enjoyed it but the hot dogs could be much better.

I heard they were considering changing the name to the Piedmonts. That would be awesome.

Out of curiosity, what’s the issue with Oaks?

That was cool over 100 years ago when this place was called the town of Raleigh. Most cities on the east coast have a mass of oak trees. In 2025 that sounds incredibly lame. You know it does.. The Raleigh Oakeries!!! Lol

i said national league because that’s what the mlb is. caps makes sense within the context of a north carolina league. not beyond that.

It’s a real shame you feel this way. We all clearly spend time here and I’d hope it’s not all for nothing. Everything discussed here goes into the evoked set of ideas for the following people on this forum:

-council members who lurk and still read this forum all the time

- people here who will email council and speak at council meetings

-people here who work for the city, transportation agencies, or developers

So I don’t think we’re powerless and in fact, I think we’d be pretty influential if we ever came to consensus and presented a unified front. I’ve suggested this before, but people have competing interests, and that’s never going to happen. Our one consistent interest should be DTR prosperity, but it clearly is not. People live near the arena district and I expect them to support that idea over a downtown stadium, but it’s still disappointing.

Yes, the big bad billionaire is going to want to make the most money, got it. But any future decision would involve a lot of parties, and some of them we can influence.

The unified from from a Raleigh YIMBY perspective already has a voice and if you’re interested in joining, let me know and I can get you an invite. It’s a nationwide organization called YIMBY Action.

I never said we have no impact, I think all of the things you mentioned are true about showing support. I just don’t think it’s a big deal to share fun renderings of a where a potential stadium could be. Sharing personally created renderings isn’t going to move the needle for anything on this project.

Seattle isn’t the only city with a marina. Athletes are everywhere, not just Oakland, Sacramento, and Vegas. The LA Dodgers are named because the citizens of Brooklyn used to be good at dodging trolleys. The Cardinal is the state bird of 7 states, none of them Missouri.

I like the idea of Caps if only because I remember going to Dorton for IceCap games (which played in an 11-state league with 4 other capital city-based teams without confusion). Is it the most unique? No. But it’s fine. Charlotte had a team named Bobcats because their owner was named Bob and it fit with another Charlotte franchise which took the name of an animal found nowhere near the Carolinas (the Cougar, which is extinct in the region, would at least have some historical ties). Long story short (too late!) is no one thinks that hard about professional team names. We’d like a cool one, but at the end of the day we will take what we can get and most people won’t care if it’s generic.

Also if we are going to have a rational discussion about where to place a Raleigh stadium, we are going to have to discuss places that aren’t downtown-adjacent. Regardless of how we feel, DTS is in competition with the arena-district, and both are in competition with my preference of the prison. Part of a growing area is there are many places to discuss, and while focus here will remain on downtown, the forum should be open (albeit perhaps with limits) to areas that can affect downtown (like North Hills).

What is North Hills? I think you mean Life Style Center.

BWAHAHAHA. my secret plan is finally in motion to activate the deep state underbelly to undermine downtown Raleigh by posting on * checks notes * the DTR community. But alas, my motives have been questioned.

A rundown of my motives:

  • I posted a MLB stadium district idea for the Central Prison site. (even though that’s not a realistic option)
  • I posted a minor league stadium idea in Smoky Hollow cause I preferred a downtown stadium over MLB at the arena district.
  • I’ve posted NHL arena ideas for the Smoky Hollow site and the Boylan Wye site. That ship has sailed.
  • I actually pitched stadium ideas at Smoky Hollow and Moore Sq East to the Railhawks organization forever ago.
  • Lenovo Center is building a mixed-use district with or without MLB Stadium. I just posted like what if there was also another stadium to consider.
  • Lord have mercy if we have to find a spot for horses. Impossible.
  • I kinda like the Cargill site better than DTS - at least its on the rail line if we could somehow get a crumb of transit.
  • I kinda like the Spring Hill site better than DTS since it could turn Dix into a central park surrounded by density.
  • DTS isn’t downtown. You got any downtown locations I haven’t thought of?

I guess I missed the memo where were all supposed to get behind downtown… south???

Bruh, even MLBRaleigh hasn’t posted a preferred site! And once they or Dundon say something, then I’ll decide my feelings on it. Until then, I’m gonna guess what I think would be cool pipe dream (central prison) and what would be realistic (Lenovo). And shoot, I’ll keep trying to shoehorn stadiums in any spots I can think of in actual downtown.

Damn, I don’t even like baseball! I’m a huge hockey fan and was just tryna see what this might do to the Lenovo district.

I know one thing I’m ABSOLUTELY sure of. And that’s listening to some random ass post questioning my motives? And telling me to find a different online community?? GTFOH

We’ve got the spot where the Bath Building used to be. Just need to tear down a few old houses and a few blocks worth of Blount St

Keep the ideas coming, Mike.

Before

After…even a very basic, small stadium is a game changer

You opened your first comment saying “it seems certain the MLB stadium would be in the Lenovo Center area” which came out of nowhere. It seems like most folks glazed over that and skipped straight to your mock ups. It doesn’t need to be in anyone’s ear that the stadium is “certainly” going in the arena district when it’s too early for that to be true at all.

I want a stadium that benefits downtown as much as possible, and that’s why I’m here discussing it. Any site adjacent or in downtown will, obviously, and anything in a mixed-use development outside of DTR won’t. Where’s your Veridea mock up? I think that would be a good one. Apex and Cary will be making their pitches when we get there, and they’ll be compelling. I’m not dumb. There are more options outside DTR than there are in/close to DTR. I honestly don’t think there’s another truly viable spot DTR-adjacent, but if there is, I’d support it.

There are now little innuendos/jokes on multiple threads mocking me. Usually when you all make it about me I stop responding completely because it’s stupid (quite flattering, but stupid). It’s been multiple days now so I’m only entertaining this to kindly ask you to stop, and I won’t respond again. You win. Thanks

You just described Downtown South by the way. And that’s okay. That is also an okay place for a MLB stadium. I happen to think a couple other spots miiiight be okay as well. That should be also okay.

Yes, obviously, that’s the same thing as the Lenovo district.

I’m confused how you think Dundon or anyone who is actually planning it will look at my MS Paint drawings and up and decide “we were going to build downtown, but did you see mike’s drawings?!?!” Look, honestly, you came across as pretty aggressive. Maybe check that next time. I’m out here just guessing like everyone else - no need for the personal attacks.
