Yeah, it’s going to be an interesting “homecoming” for Connor Hellebuyck who plays for Winnipeg.
With the recent…news…on breaking ground for a soccer stadium in DTS in the next 10 months, are we anticipating any sort of update on anything else DTS-related? I note that the fenced-off area on Penmarc across from Green St is quite full of stuff. But to what end? What are they actually doing there? I should have grabbed a pic the last time I went by, but I was driving the school minibus and I think they discourage using cell phones while driving students…
Anyway, it’d be nice to see ANY kind of movement on that project at all. The Downtown South website does claim that the “Live Entertainment Venue” is “fully leased,” and that the “Workplace” and “Adaptive Reuse” spaces are “now leasing,” but the website doesn’t even have a site map or the old renderings that appear on Kane’s website, and for all I know those things have been “now leasing” for four years.
Without getting into name calling about Kane and Malik and everybody else, is there any indication beyond the recent soccer news update that wheels are actually starting to turn here?
I do know that the entertainment venue basically had all of its permit approvals before going on hold. I assume that the will have to resubmit for the permits.
I believe the fenced off spot is being used as staging area for other nearby Kane projects. Its had construction materials for a while now.
Just my read of the situation but I don’t think we see anything on this site until the 2030s because the plans for the district from 10 years ago don’t make sense anymore and will need to be rethought.
I don’t really understand the point of the soccer stadium after we lost MLS or the 'live entertainment venue" with the new RHA a mile away. This is obviously a prime spot with a lot of potential but the long term vision needs to be revisited
This would be a great spot for an MLB Stadium but you’re right it pointless becasue MLS isn’t coming to Raleigh. And I don’t think the city should fund a stadium for the NWSL team that should be privately funded. Baseball is a bigger priority.
raleigh is seriously needing a venue in the ~3500 capacity range. ritz is constantly overcrowded and sold out. red hat is a different category of venue and doesn’t compete for the same acts that the dts venue would
I just think Steve Malik is delulu he still think we’re gonna get MLS why can’t he not admit he failed. The first mistake he made was putting it on state property, then when the state said no he still tried to convince people it was a good idea. Instead of moving on and choosing another sure he stayed on this by the time he changed his mind on the site, ir was too late and we know what happened. From what I’ve heard nie he just wants a stadium for NWSL Kansas city NWSL stadium was privately funded. Which makes sense women soccer isn’t as big as men’s soccer. Downtown South is approved for a stadium build it sure, but Steve please i ask you stop being delulu.
Even without MLS, I love the idea of bringing our current teams to Raleigh from Cary.
@prettychill The DTS district has always included an indoor performance venue, so you may get your wish.
I’m not sure MLS is still on the table. He’s switch gears to go for one of the new to be USL Premier League. North Carolina FC to Withdraw from USL Championship, Eyes 2028 Division One Launch | National Soccer Network
Still don’t want taxpayer funding involved it’s not a major league.
My understanding was it was outdoors. If it’s indoors then maybe that does make more sense. However, I’d rather a revamped Martin Marietta fill that gap if we are dreaming.
One thing that I think could be interesting in DTS as arena adjacent is a nice indoor ice rink that could host hockey tournaments on top of youth teams. I’m not deep into the hockey world but from what I understand there is still a huge shortage of ice space
I believe that the capacity is 3,000 indoors with a 500 rooftop venue.
We’re also supposed to be getting the 4,500 capacity ballroom at the Lenovo Center Arena District
It’s a hole in the Triangle music scene overall tbh. Durham is also in early stages of planning for a new venue around this capacity.
Ever heard the history of the NBA???
Was just thinking about that earlier. MLS is still growing rapidly, so I forsee a good chance that the new soccer league merges/is bought out by the MLS in the next 10-20 years. at the very least it should compete on the same level. Anything like this would be impossible in any of the other (big 4 leagues), but since soccer is still expanding it’s reach in America, this would make perfect sense for their continued growth.
Yeah, some Canadian gym teacher living in Massachusetts wanted the kids to have a game to play inside when it’s cold, so he had them throw balls into fruit crates. And 100 years later we had Shaq.
Can’t say I’ve studied the history of the NBA. But not sure how that relates to my post about NCFC’s push to join USL Premier.
But since you brought it up, I have no idea how this new league will work out. I think it has some potential.
IMO MLS has some structural problems. No pro/ rel and the season calendar does not match the rest of the leagues around the world. Plus zero broadcast TV deals. Hard to lure in new fans if they have to have an AppleTV subscription. Until they fix those issues, there is an opening for another league.
Will it succeed, who knows. It made fold in 5 years, get absorbed by MLS, or just coexist and slowly build up popularity. Hard to say.
