Raleigh Stadium/Arena/Sports Discussions

That’s sad news for Sacramento. That city worked a long time to get approved for a new team.

That being said, it would be awesome if that opens up a spot for NCFC and Malik and Kane step up.

Nothing but a temporary delay. California is the wealthiest state in America by far. There will be another investor if this guy permanently backs out (which I doubt is the case). It is probably a bit of a show to get either the contractor or City or both to shoulder a greater burden of the costs.

They have a stadium site selected. A stadium will get built. Sacramento will get an MLS team.

This news makes me dang glad Raleigh didn’t get an MLS team the last go around. This very well could’ve been us. This does open the door, and maybe undercuts that ridiculous $200 mil expansion fee. MLS has been called a pyramid scheme before, its hard to argue. If you were serious about growing pro-soccer in the US, the fee would not anything like that. Normally I’d agree with @HardeesBiscuit but things are so screwed up in California these days, who knows is someone will rescue the team. Maybe they do, and in 5 years Raleigh picks them up in a bankruptcy sale, lol.

Well you know it happened in San Antonio they were cheated out by Austin for the same reason, Garber money sunken. Austin doing well because it’s there only pro-team in there City’s history. Sam Antonio was doing all the right steps but you know Precourt moved his rights to Austin, while keeping the Columbus colors in Columbus so a the Haslam could buy it out they paid $500 million for the team for the colors to stay intact to preserve the Columbus team.

It’s very sad what going on in Sac-Town they’ve been waiting 20 years for this. And this happens.

But I don’t agree that it was good for NCFC didn’t get a team in team in the last round of expansion, and to stay out of the last round of expansion, Malik was just weak when he got the competition from Tepper. He was gonna join forces with Dundon thst should motivated him to get it done faster.

With as big as college basketball is here has there ever been any talk at all about someone going for a NBA team?

I would love that (favorite sport to watch by far) but with the Hornets hardly 3 hours away and the large number of NBA teams in general, that’d probably be a tough sell, same with NFL.

I’m a huge Hawks fan so I’ll be driving to Charlotte or even DC whenever they play there. I think Seattle and Las Vegas are pretty much penciled in for the 30 to 32 expansion. We’d not stand a chance but I was wondering with all the basketball interest if anyone had ever tried to drum something up.
I’d love MLS too but again with Charlotte just getting a team that’s probably dead.

I think our best best is to get behind the #MLBRaleigh movement and of course continue to support the #NHLCanes.

A downtown MLB stadium with entertainment district around it would be killer

I think because of college basketball, an NBA team would struggle here. Not benefit from it. People love their State, Dook and Tarheels… I don’t see that translate directly to supporting an NBA team. I could be wrong. Not to mention Charlotte, the Hornets have been a disappointment since the first iteration in the 90’s.

MLB is our only shot.

if MLB would it be the Carolina ‘Something or others’? it would have the raleigh as the city designation would it?

Oh ye of little faith…Raleigh MLS is far from dead…I can promise you with a high degree of certainty.

Biased but I think we’d have a better fan base than Charlotte. Seems like more of a soccer friendly city

Yeah Applebee’s FC has been a disaster so far. Overpriced tickets in a football stadium. If Malik can pull off a nice stadium experience and broadcast it loudly we could turn opinions.

With mlb is it by trying to relocate another team (like Miami or something) or expansion franchise?

Maybe but no interest billionaire in Raleigh.

Billionaires own pro teams in cities they don’t reside in…it was like that with the Hurricanes when Peter Karamos owned them and it may be like that now with Dundon. Pro teams make their money mostly from luxury/box suites, season ticket holders, merch, concessions, and parking. What Raleigh needs are more 500 fortune companies (high paying jobs) so that it’s worth while to bring another pro team here and break even at the very least. We already have the affect of “another pro team” here with NC State, Duke, and UNC with home football and basketball games (2 highest revenue sports in college athletics). Amazon and Apple were huge losses for us BUT our economy is growing (actually one of the best in the country). I think it’s still possible given that we almost landed the Minnesota Twins in the early 90s but of course the metrics change over time as well. Billionaires will go wherever money and opportunity presents itself and given that the MLB comish acknowledges NC as a top 10 most pop. state without a team, the league will weigh all possibilities when expansion happens.
