Raleigh Union Station and RUSbus Facility / Union West

This actually looks really, really nice. I was a bit bummed when Kane wasn’t selected, because I loved the renderings (even though there were some flaws in his design, such as the height). That being said, it looks like Hoffman really showed up here. Hope the water feature stays; that’s a super interesting addition that I didn’t expect.

Also, love seeing two floors of retail. Not overkill, but it really has the potential to activate this block. The existing portion of Union Station is just a bit too far removed from the street to really draw in shoppers, but RUSbus could fill in that gap and finally bring in some exciting tenants.

From the architect’s website… wow! https://www.perkinseastman.com/projects/raleigh-union-station-square/

Great post @keita! This looks really good. I was cautiously optimistic when Hoffman won this project bc the Wharf in DC has gotten good press (i haven’t checked it out in person yet).

I think the design looks strong. I like the retail activation and love the waterfall. What a great way to provide pleasant sound buffering in a loud Bus terminal.

The staircases and bridge look nice and I hope they will be bright orange metal to tie in to the design of Union Station.

Edit: Wow! @mike The tower and interior look amazing!!

Now if we can get some movement on the CAM block, this will be very dense corner of the city. (Also Kane development south of the tracks and eventual redev of the northern half of the Fairweather block…)

West St is really turning into one heck of an urban corridor!
These building drawings look fantastic, and adding a serious building on the CAM block . . . wowza!!

About 3 hours south of this exact spot

Has anyone else tried to count floors on the northern building? I’m getting 30 plus a “crown” on the top.

The bus station is going to be the nicest place in downtown Raleigh

And in only 4 and a half years! Assuming nothing gets delayed. Lol

Looks a lot better than expected. Not much taller than the Dillon.

Impressed by the design. Hope they have plenty of ventilation to take the bus exhaust fumes away, otherwise people won’t be encouraged to visit the retail and restaurants.

Or hopefully more electric buses by then, so no exhaust at all

Where is the parking deck ramp and parking deck?

The parking deck is supposed to be sandwiched between the bus station and (according to the renderings Mike posted) the taller of the two towers.

You’ll see several black arrows along Hargett St. on this schematic; the one leading to parking deck ramps is at the bottom (west), right next to the train tracks.

With this position and how we’ll have more passenger rail service, I can’t wait for this railroad crossing to be closed so that this leg of Hargett just becomes a sort of entryway for the bus terminal and the parking deck.

EDIT: clarified to make language about Hargett St. crossing’s closure stronger.

This will be such a game changer for the Warehouse district. Fingers crossed it looks like the renderings when built out :crossed_fingers:. Thank you for posting this update @mike

Wonder if the Dillon would offer lower retail rent during the 4 years of construction blocking most of the street.

I still don’t see how NCDOT/Raleigh is going to grade separate the rail lines from the station to Peace Street. There’s not enough distance to re-grade the tracks so that the streets can go over/under the tracks.

For high speed rail use plus regular commuter rail service, the current layout just doesn’t make any sense.
