RDU Expansion/2040 Master Plan

The whole Connecticut coast is beautiful. So many adorable beach towns.

That flight is literally worth it just to grab some New Haven pizza… New Haven is in my opinion the pizza capital of the world. I want some Sally’s Apizza now

Frontier will restore its nonstop service to Hartford (BDL) on April 27.

Probably sub daily. Not the same as what a Delta or American (or Southwest or jetBlue) would do.

That’s correct — not daily

Delta resuming the Paris direct flight approx August 1st.

You might have heard of (and made fun of) American Airlines’ recent move to use buses for connecting “flights” to rural or less-popular destinations. But what if we take that idea seriously for just a second, and imagine if we could take cars off the road for going between RDU and smaller communities in eastern and central North Carolina?

No that is just no. I don’t even like that idea.

Smaller as in Greenville / rocky mount etc or smaller as in small towns?

If the former, you may get a few cars off the road - probably not enough to make an actual difference. If the latter, I don’t see much difference since those towns don’t have any other services for last mile connectivity.

Does RDU not have multiple shuttles to and from the airport from all cities basically within a 2-3 hour radius.

For example, ATL has shuttles (3rd party of course) that has 26 daily trips to Macon, I’ve seen the same company with X trips to Augusta, savannah, Chattanooga etc

There’s a lot to be said for going through security in a small town, boarding a bus, and being dropped right into the concourse for your flight without having to go through security at a major airport. It is funny though since many refer to flying these days being like bus service in the sky.

Was wondering if you were in Rocky Mt. you check in and go through security there. Get on a bus and it drops you off inside the security zone at RDU.

Otherwise it would be just like any number of third party shuttles that stop you at the check in counter.

When I read a story about it the other day, it said just that. You go through security and check your luggage before boarding the bus, and then it takes you right to the terminal concourse. It’s not a bad idea if you think about it. If it didn’t offer all of that, then it’s just a bus ride. Also, I presume that the plane would have to wait for you if were “connecting” via their bus. They know who’s on it and where they are heading.

United once held up a 747 from Chicago to Shanghai by about 15 min for me when flight from RDU was late. RDU pulled out from gate on time and then set on taxiway for about an hour before taking off!!! Got to Chicago 10 min after flight to Shanghai-PVG was suppose to leave. Lucky at departure gate was only about 10 gates down same concourse and I ran for it. When got to gate the waiting area was empty accept for one United person by boarding door. As I turn cornier into waiting area she call out my name asking if was me and told me to get on. As i got on plane they shut the door behind me. As we took off my thought was no way my bag made it, But when got to Shanghai it was one of the first ones to hit the carousel. Someone did a major hassle to make that happen. :exploding_head:

Not sure about Rocky Mount, but here in Greenville at least there is already a Greyhound bus connecting to Raleigh, as well as the Amtrak Thruway bus to the nearest train station in Wilson. ECU also operates a shuttle to RDU around fall/Thanksgiving/winter/spring breaks.

I was picturing places like Greenville, Rocky Mount, Southern Pines, and maybe even the Outer Banks.

I don’t know of any beyond your typical airport shuttles like SuperShuttles for in-region rides. There is this RDU-based service as well as this Pinehurst-based specifically serve Pinehurst/Southern Pines, but that seems more like the exceptions rather than the rule.

And more importantly, we definitely do not have any bus services where you won’t have to redo your security screening.

Whispers “should we trust the security screening passengers will get in a small town bus station” :joy:

But you’re right, I didn’t think about that part. That would make this a decent option.

A direct shuttle from the future RusBus station to the airport would be a pretty sweet

Not as sweet as a direct train, but still an excellent option.
I’ve long thought we need to be looking at trains to planes for a lot of short hauls. Birmingham is just over 150 miles to Atlanta, and those flights are the first delayed. When I lived in Oxford, Miss, it was about 90 miles or so to the Memphis airport - and how I longed for a regular train or bus. I’d love to see the airlines get involved - like Virgin was for awhile - in more reliable and sustainable ground transportation to feed the major airports.
