Don’t think I saw this anywhere yet. This is exciting as tons of connecting flights to Europe go through London.
TBJ announced it, too, but with the context that American Airlines was going to do that in March.
To be fair, though, a Delta spokesperson confirmed in that article that they’re still planning to revive their Paris flight this August. So at least there’s that (and the new Iceland flight!).
But will this actually get people to travel overseas for work, again? I think that’s a different question. For example, UNC and NC State still prohibit international travel for employees except in rare cases, and Duke still specifically lists the UK and France as one of many countries where travel authorizations are suspended.
Yeah, don’t go over there, you may get that COVID they have in the UK.
I don’t know if work travel will ever reach pre-pandemic levels. I think 2+ years of Zoom/Webex/MS Teams/etc. has forever changed the attitude towards work. For sure it’ll rebound in the next couple of years, but long-term I have my doubts.
From a personal travel perspective, I think this should be a great thing. I know people are definitely suffering from pandemic fatigue and want to travel and direct flights to London certainly help in that regard.
I didn’t realize how many non stop destinations we lost during covid at RDU. Though seems like we’re getting a bunch back this summer and some new places.
Precovid we had 57 destinations with 5 non stop international flights. Today we only have 37 with 2 non stop international destinations.
Does anyone happen to have that list of 57? I’d be curious to know which cities we lost.
I know Hartford, Cincinnati, and Montreal were three.
Thought Montreal was restarting in a few months?
Still mad about Hartford. It was scheduled to come back in august - had the tickets available and everything and they yanked it again.
Also I saw Newburgh, NY which is great for visiting
Hudson Valley!

Are there any new development updates?
That’s correct — it restarts June 1
We just passed a $250MM budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Several paused projects have already restarted. You can get a sense for what capital projects are coming up this year in the business plan (start at page 20).
You the real MVP.
Also, no disrespect to any native Floridians, but it always amazes me that there’s so much demand for flights to Florida. There are just… so many other places you can visit. Just feels disproportionate.
Edit: I should clarify, it’s not that there aren’t cool places to visit in Florida; it’s more that so many people seem to just go to Florida over and over again instead of visiting other places.
Well, as a native Floridian… it’s a place I do enjoy visiting, and will never ever move back to for any reason, so, I get why there’d be so many round-trip flights… And it’s cheap. There are, like, a million flights there, did you know?
Seriously, though, there are a million other places to go, but Florida just has everything (except snow) and there’s so much infrastructure it’s too cheap not to go back again and again…kind of like Wal-Mart or McDonald’s. In many ways Florida is the Wal-Mart of tourist destinations: it seems like a good idea (you can get everything there), but the trip is never as easy as you think it’s going to be and there are a lot of questionable people there.
To be fair, Florida is huge. It’s almost as large as, and has 50% more people than, all of New England combined (21 vs 14 million).
RDU says, “We’re excited to welcome Avelo Airlines as RDU’s 13th airline partner! Avelo announced their debut service to New Haven (HVN) beginning May 26. Tickets are on sale now at AveloAir.com.”
I know Avelo =/= Big 3 or established carriers but I wonder if anyone restores Hartford in response.
Home of Yale University and New Haven-style pizza. Would be a nice weekend trip.
